I am interested in buying a couple of Silpat mats because I have heard such great things about them here. I went on Amazon to buy them and was reading some reviews. A few people said that they had put them in the oven and they would smoke so bad that their fire alarms went off. I looked at the cheaper (knock off) brand too and there were more complaints about the smoke, but also that the cookies got a funny taste from the mats. There were a lot of rave reviews too, but a few that had complaints. I was wondering if anyone out there has had these experiences? Thanks!!

I have never had a problem using silpats. I love them. Easy to use and clean. Could it be that some people are confusing the non-stick silicon rolling mats with the baking mats? Those would definetely burn if used in the oven.

I have a silicone mat from Tupperwear. I love it and use it for everything. I have never had it smoke itself. I did have something on their one time that the butter got under the mat and caused a bit of smoke but that wasn't from the mat itself.

I love my silpat! I don't know how I ever baked cookies without them! I have never noticed a funny taste or any smoke. That is very odd...I wonder what could have caused this problem?
