How long in advance should I make Fondant accents for them too dry like bows or figures? And when you cut out lets say circles to put on your cake do you have to wait till they dry to put them on? Can you make your accents out of gumpaste or does everyone just use fondant?
Where I'm at, due to high humidity, my fondant never gets completely hard. So, if I need to make bows or something stong like that, I either use gumpaste or a 50/50 mixture of fondant and gumpaste. Those usually take a day or 2 to totally air dry.
But for fondant accents that you're putting directly on a cake & don't need to harden due to their structure, you can cut them out and place them immediately on your cake so they form nicely to the sides and whatnot.
For bows, I let them dry for a week. You can get by with only 4 days or so, but they need to be really dry. Circles don't need to be dry because then they won't stick as well to the cake or go over corners. If you want them to stick out from the cake, then they need to be dried, but if you just want to stick them on the cake they need to be moist. Hope this helps
If you are making circles and such to put directly on a cake, you can use them immediately after cutting them. I have found, though, that if you let them sit just a few minutes, they are easier to handle. When I make anything like a bow, etc., I usually mix Gum-tex into the fondant and make it up about a week in advance so it will dry really hard. If you use fondant without Gum-tex added, it will sometimes "wilt" when you put it with buttercream because of the moisture.
thanks ya'll. When you say add a little gumtex is there some magic formula or do you just put in a tbs??
