Help! Fondant Pieces Drying Crusty...
Decorating By Samsgranny Updated 17 Oct 2006 , 7:04pm by Samsgranny
Help, the fondant pieces I cut out yesterday are drying a little crusty and starting to crack around the edges for my McQueen cake. Any suggestions? What if I rub a little shortening on them, would that delay the drying?
Thanks, Sams
I have just rubbed some shortening on the spots where it started to crack and that has help a lot. It will not delay the drying process as far as I know, never had a problem. Did you roll it out on a 50/50 mix of ps & cornstarch? If so, that is the culprit.

I'm not much help, but I just wanted to tell you that this happens to me all of the time! I think shortening helps.
Hi Samsgranny, well to tell you the truth, this has never happened to me with cut-outs, maybe your fondant was to dry to begin with, is it home-made or brand name? One of my fondant covered cakes cracked once around the corners (it was a square) and I was adviced to rub some crisco, and that helped a lot. So you are right, crisco should help. I would also use a butter knife or my fingers and try to push it together to prevent from cracking more. HTH. Good luck.
Thanks for your input everyone, I appreciate it.
