I'm making a cake covered in fondant but I need to add some highlights to bring out some of the impressions in the fondant. Do I have to wait until the fondant is 'dry' and what should I mix with the color paste to thin?

any help is appreciated!

not sure what you mean by the fondant being dry but I used vanilla mixed with Wilton colors to paint... I think you could also use vodka.

I just put the fondant on the cake and it's still pretty soft - should I wait until it hardens a little? I don't have any vodka - just straight vanilla?

I just painted a fondant cake last night. I used the Wilton gel colors with vodka...turned out beautiful!

I would wait a little bit or pop it in the fridge for a few minutes depending on what you're painting and how much pressure you need to apply you could mar the fondant!

You can paint it while it's soft. And make sure it's vanilla extract with the alcohol not the fake vanilla. It is the alcohol that helps the colors to dry and not be sticky. I have several in my photos of painting on fondant if you would like to take a look.

ok, just ck'd the pantry. I do have pure vanilla and the color will work, but will it give it a funky flavor? Oh, I also found some Rum and some Bourban. I threw out the vodka just a few weeks ago b/c there was only a tiny bit! AGH!

well hun if you hafta you can go to the liqour store n just buy one of the little "shooters" they usually have up at the register if need be. Nah it won't have a funky flavor to it if you use the vanilla actually it'll taste better anyway. The alcohol evaporates. I wouldn't use rum or bourbon because they do have strong distinguishable flavors. The vanilla should work just fine.
