Someone has requested a cake like the matrix...with black background and green words. They insist on no chocolate due to allergies and I am at a loss as to how to make my icing black without making a big mess. Please help!

Hmmm, have you thought about the black color spray? You can get black icing, but it will take alot of black, will probably have a bitter taste with that big of an area covered, and it will leave everyone walking around with black tongues, teeths and lips.

This is what I did to get my road effect on my School bus cake...I mixed brown in my icing..let it set for a little while then mixed the black gel in it. Worked fine for me.icon_smile.gif

Here is what I do for black BC icing.

If you have the time, start a few days ahead of when you need the icing. Add enough black until it looks like an ugly dary grey. Then cover it well (press plastic wrap onto the top of the icing) and wait a day or two. It will turn darker. If it's still not dark enough, add some more black and again wait....

If you don't have time, I have found buying the tubes in the cake mix section of the grocery store works great.

Good luck!

P.S. Check out the black cat with the green eyes that was posted today or yesterday....very cool effect.

I agree with wgoat5
I use brown to start when I can't use chocolate. It come out great and you don't have to use as much black as if you started out with black alone.

I posted a note in the fall leaves topic about an experience I had with brown coloring yesterday. I colored my basketweave cake a light tan (about the color of peanut butter pie) and the buttercream tasted bitter.....VERY BITTER! I am nrevous about using it, anyone else have similar results? Any other colors to watch besides red? UPSET!!!!

ty for all the info!

i am not concerned about the green as i have used green before without a problem.
unfortunately i am on a bit of a time crunch and will not be able to let my icing sit for a couple days...maybe a couple hours, but not sure how useful that will be.
i think i will try adding some store-bought black icing (store-bought! *cringe* i know!)

thanks again icon_smile.gif

ps. i'll be sure post pictures if it turns out good icon_wink.gif
