I have a friend who is getting married next weekend and she wants me to do her wedding cake. It's not going to be anything real extravagant thank goodness, she wants 3 tiers and she wants to use artificial flowers on it. She's picking out the flowers. But my questions is (and this sounds really stupid to me icon_cry.gif ) but how do I use them? Do I just stick them right into the cake with the stems they have on them, do I cut the stems down or all the way off and just lay them on? She wants them around the top of each layer of cake to where you can't see in between the middle of each tier, sort of hiding the pillars. I hope I'm explaining this right icon_biggrin.gif . I was thinking I would cut down the stems, would that be alright to stick in a cake that way? I don't even know what kind of stems their going to have yet. Thanks for any help or advice you can give thumbs_up.gif

I was told never to stick metal wire into cake. Others have done it but I usually cut the flowers down or use a floral bowl and some green foam. However, I think if you layer them inside teh pillars I would think you should be able to hide them. hope this helps.

Thanks! That's what I had heard to, not to stick metal wires in the cake. You know how theres just a little tip on the bottoms of the flowers usually? Like if I cut the stem all the way off, theres a little plastic tip there still I think, maybe that would be enough to hold them into the cake. I can't use a floral bowl because I'll be doing them in a circular shape around the cakes. She found a picture of a cake done that way, but the cake she saw had real roses around it, she wants to use the fake ones though. So I'll be laying one single flower at a time next to each other, I won't be using a bouquet of them together.

If you are laying the flowers side by side you can do a couple of things. First you can wrap the wire with foil, then you can stick them down into the cake, or you can make a wax paper ring, cutting the stems and laying them side by side, if the flowers are large enough you should not be able to see the wax paper. The other option is to use flower picks, you would normally use them for fresh flowers, so you can put a little water in the pick, but with artificial you of course would need no water. These are just a few other ideas. You of course do not want to let the flowers touch the edible surface of the cake.

Thank you cupcake icon_biggrin.gif ! Not sure what kind of flowers she's getting, but if they have plastic over the wires, that would be alright to put in the cake wouldn't it? She needs to just let me make some buttercream roses for this and make it easier lol thumbs_up.gif

my wedding cake was done the exact same way with real roses.......and I just laid them on there because we got the roses wholesale so we didn't have a florist and the baker didn't mess around with flowers.........but with the fake ones........I would suggest since you're making the cake you know exactlly how much room you have between the colums I would get one of those styrofoam rounds that are a couple inches thick........one that would fit perfectly in there and put all the flowers on that......then if you're using a central column construction you could just cut a hole in the styrofoam with a cookie cutter or something and slide it down as you stack the cakes! Otherwise.......you could just stick a small circle of wax paper on the top of the cake and just lay the artificial flowers on there just like you would real ones.....you couldn't see any stems on MY cake just the blooms so I don't see why it wouldn't work with artificial?

Oh thank you KHalstead! I really like the idea of lining it with some wax paper and just laying them on there, I think that sounds like the easiest thing to do! thumbsdown.gif Geez I don't know why I didn't even think of that! icon_redface.gif

Oh, I forgot to ask, why is it that the artificial flowers shouldn't touch the cake? Is it because they may be dusty or dirty, or is it because of something they may be made with? No, really, I don't know! icon_redface.gificon_lol.gif Isn't that the dumbest question you've ever heard, I feel like an idiot lol but I guess if I don't ask I won't know icon_smile.gif

I don't know the answer to your question, but you should't think that your questions are dumb. There are no dumb questions if you don't know the answer.

We are all here to help each other and some of us know things that other don't. I am sure there are thounds of CC members, including myself, that don't know the answer to your question and are glad you asked it so that we may learn as well. Please don't be so hard on yourself.

Good luck on the cake!

I have no idea........actually I dont' see why it would be a problem to have them touch the cake honestly!!! I guess the worst that could happen is the color of the roses might bleed into the icing if the icing is white and the roses are colored......who knows?? I have stuck wire in cakes with no problems too LOL! I just figured the wax paper would eliminate anyone saying ewww...you just laid them on theree?? Lol
