Fondant Decorations & Buttercream
Decorating By bringonthecake Updated 17 Aug 2007 , 5:34am by bringonthecake
Hello all! I'm a newbie and have worked with BC decorations on BC and fondant decorations on fondant but have never used fondant decorations on BC. How do you get fondant to 'stick' to the BC? Do you place fondant on right after icing the cake or wait till it crusts and then do it? What do you use...royal icing or buttercream to adhere fondant to BC?
Many, many thanks!!
I haven't really worked with fondant much, so I am not an expert, but I'd say you could just use a dab of buttercream to adhere the fondant to the frosted cake.
I wouldn't use royal to do it, because the grease in the buttercream will make that break down, and it may cause the decorations to come off.
Attaching the decorations before the buttercream crusts would also work, but if you need it to crust to do your smoothing and such, I would just go ahead and do what I said earlier and just attach it with more buttercream.
This is just my own personal opinion, so hopefully this little bump will help you get some answers from some more experienced decorators.
Hope this helps,
Holly
Well, I am not experienced but I have put fondant decorations on buttercream. I let my fondant decorations dry for a few hours before putting it on the cake. I have put fondant on the buttercream before it crusts and I have also used buttercream to attach fondant to the cake after the buttercream crusts. It works fine for me either way.
Hope this helps until someone more experienced comes along lol.
usually my buttercream has already crusted. I like to use gumpaste "glue" (which is just very tiny pieces of gumpaste dissolved in water) to stick my fondant decorations onto buttercream. Just take a small paintbrush to dab on just a bit of the "glue" to the back of your decoration...has always worked very well for me!
Thanks...this is great info! I can't wait to try it!!!
