Any Ideas For My First Order?!?
Decorating By BearLuvsCakes Updated 2 Nov 2006 , 4:49am by BearLuvsCakes
My best friend is getting married in about a month and a half. She asked me if I would make her fiancee's groom cake. Of course I was excited and have a great idea in mind but I need some ideas on the rest of the cake.
We want to do a sheet cake with dragons on it. The only thing that we know we want to do is put wooden dowels in a section and use a cake plate and put a dragon statue on it. We talked about fondant dragons and everything but we both decided we wanted to go with the statue because I'm still new at this and I don't want it to look bad. So what I need help with is the rest of the cake. We talked about having the dragon on the cake and then have the rest kind of look like a stream in the woods. We also talked about making a cave out of the wonder mold pan but I would have to see the dragon we were using first to decide if the cave would even look good.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what scene I could do? Like I said I'm just getting started at this so anything that's simple but I could do would be great! This is really the cake that I want to show that I can really do this. And I know I can rely on you guys here for some great ideas!
I don't mean to sound whiny but can no one help me? You guys give everyone else such great ideas, but I don't get any? That makes me sad...
Hmm, I have never done anything like this. What is the significance of dragons? Why are you using those?
(I am just asking because it may help to generate other ideas)
The one thing I think of when I think of dragons in fire. Maybe you could make flames of orange/red/yellow coming up the side of the cake with royal icing?
Other ideas are making some sort of pagoda out of gingerbread, which is very decorated with icing, and attaching that on top.
I also like the ideas you have of a stream and a cave.
You could make little fish out of gumpaste (asian-lloking ones) and have them jumping from the stream. You could also make fondant rocks to go beside the stream.
What colors are you thinking of? I am thinking more bold colors. I also like the idea of some sort of shinyness- made gold lusterdust?
Let us know what you decide and post pics too!
Congrats on your first commission! That is GREAT!
As soon as I read your post about possibly having a cave, I thought of one of the books in the C.S. Lewis Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe series. In one of those books (can't remember which) there's a dragon who is guarding a cave full of treasure. If I were molding a dragon out of fondant I'd have his tail wrapped around a pile of gold coins and jewels, perhaps sleeping. And I'd have a very dense forest around the cave.
Sounds like a cool cake idea - good luck with it and please post pics when you're done!
What if you carve a larger sheetcake (couple layers approx 6 inches) into a rock formation?
Or do the sheet cake to look like a wooden plaque that it is sitting on.
I actually have lots of dragon statues here but the one that has the rock formation under it is locked up or I would send you a picture of the idea.
It really depends on the dragon you get. We have crystal, pewter, ivory and some that are very colorful, but not all would look right on the same type of base.
do a search on this site for dragons should give you plenty ideas
Thanks so much for the ideas. It helps!! I've looked through the dragons on the site and I just cant find what I'm looking for... I have an idea playing in my mind. Can't wait to give it a try! I'll post pics!
When I think of dragons, I think of them flying through the air. If you've got your statue on a stand above the cake, maybe you can have some clouds on wire or something sticking up above your cake so that the dragon is flying through them. Then the cake below could have the woodland scene you were talking about . . . he could be flying over a stream with trees, etc . . .
