I am recreating a couple's wedding cake for their 50th anniversary party. I have a couple questions:

I am making molded sugar pieces to be applied to the side of the cake. Will these just stick to the buttercream or will I have to use additional buttercream or royal icing to attach them. How far in advance can I apply them before they get soggy?

The bottom tier will be 12" x 16" x 4". I am using the Magic Line 12" x 16" x 3" pan--making two layers of 2" each. How much cake batter will I need to use to get a 2" layer?

Thank you for helping me with these questions.

Make sure you allow several days for your sugar pieces to dry. I like to attach them to the cake with royal icing. That way, you really don't have to worry about the moisture in the buttercream.
