Okay, anyone got a really good way to install the middle and top tiers on a wedding cake that is iced in buttercream without wrecking the icing with your fingers when you lay each one on?

I use a big spatula, like the ones to turn pancakes.

Okay, I'm definitely not an expert, and you probably already know this trick but.... When I dowel the cake, I stagger - push every other one all the way in and leave the others a little higher. It gives me some "finger" room. Once I set the cake on the dowels, the weight pushes them all the way in. Does this make sense?
