It is easier than you think. You MUST make sure the cupcakes fit tight together or the frosting will sink between. No hole or spaces between. I put a bit of frosting on the bottom of each cupcake liner to hold them on the board. Don't over fill them! I found if I fill them a little less than for regular cupcakes it is SO much easier to cover smoothly. They should be level with the top of the liner for the best results. Here is one that I did for my Grandson and noone knew it was a cupcake cake.

I second the comment about making sure the cupcakes are REALLY close together! The two that I made in my photos were super easy, but the sesame street one had icing fall through a couple holes!
Ah well!
I didn't stick down each cupcake, I just did the outside ones and it worked fine for keeping them all in place!
