Hello all my cake friends! I am exhausted, but I finished the show and it was great!!
there were 7 other cake decorators there, and about 700 brides. I felt like a little fish in a big pond, at first. then the brides started ohhhing and awwwwing over my cakes, then tasted my cake samples and loved that also. they walked around and got 7 pretty large pieces of cake before they got to me, so luckily I put mine in a souffle cup (2oz.) with a lid and told them they could take it home and eat it later....they loved that!!!!!
they also LOVED my white vanilla carmel cake (wink wink fellow cc'ers it was soooo simple and soooo good!)
anyway, I think I have a wedding lined up for june for a cake to serve 300...and hundreds of brides, 500 to be exact, snatched up my business card.
I told them that I offered a unique cake consiltaion....I go to their house and meet with the bride, the groom, and both of their mothers and we have a little "cake party" and try different flavors and fillings. (now, I can offer this special "service" because my commercial kitchen is in my basement and I have 4 very loud children ages 15,13,6,and 3....haha)
they loved this!!!
I am sooo tired, but already wanting to start thinking about what I want to decorate for the next show.
I just want to say thank you all! with out you guys I would never have had the confidence to spend that kind of money on a bridal show, and actually showed up with all the famous cake decorators in my area.
have a great day everyone!!!!!!
yes, I will post pictures.....errr, I'll have my hubby post pictures of my booth and the cakes that I took.
Congratulations! I can't wait to see the pictures that you post. That is such an accomplishment and I bet that even the exhaustion feels good! Passing out 500 business cards is amazing, too. If only 10% of them decide to use you, that's 50 CAKES!! Good luck!
Glad you had a great experience! Could you share a few of the questions or some of the most commonly asked questions?
Congratulations!
I'm also in the Kc area, and looked into doing that same show- Overland Park?
I decided it was WAY out of budget right now, and I am looking into getting legal on the kitchen side. I also have 4 kids, a bit younger then yours, but you are an inspiration to me that maybe one day I can do it too! (Of course I don't want to be your competition ![]()
I have attended that show to "scope it out" and I'm sure you will get TONZ of business, especially where you are offering such a one on one tasting.
I can't wait tto see your pictures!

okay, the most common questions were #1 How much do your cakes start at. #2 how many servings is that cake.
you need to know the serving size of each cake you are showing.
about the cost of the show, YEP it was very expensive! BUT, my husband and I have have spent the last two years working on my commercial kiitchen in my basement, and I've sold birthday cakes to friends and they have all raved about them....so when I was ready to step into the wedding cake business, I was ready....I've taken the wilton classes and spent lots of time experimenting with new techniques and perfecting my fondant cakes and my gumpaste flowers. we had some money in savings, so after MUCH discussion and debating we decided to go for it. Let me tell you, it was very scary to pay that much money. then most of the brides are getting married a year from now, so If I get orders it won't be for awhile. that being said...I am going to BEG for more money to do the next show in march. :}
my advice to you would be to look into small craft shows in your area to start with. I've done that for a couple of years and showed my birthday cakes off, and have gotten orders that way. also, people in your area will remember you, eventually, for birthday cakes. when I say eventually, what I am saying to you is that most people have to see your business name something like 7 times before you are locked in there memory. so if you do the same craft show over and over, people will start coming over to find you, and will automatically think of you when they need a cake. that was great and cheap way to get the experience for the big $$$ show. not to mention the new business you may get. plus at most craft shows you do not need a liscence. check your area first though.
good luck!

Oh Melody! I love your advice! I am south of KC and dying to break into weddings! I love the craft show idea!
Becky
plus craft shows usually cost between #$30.00-$50.00 so it is very affordable.
good luck
I never thought of doing craft shows, what a great way to get started. Thanks and congrats on your big show. How exciting for you. Who doesn't like people ohhing and aweing at your cakes ![]()

That's so cool! What a great way to get you out there in the wedding cake biz, sounds like the brides to be loved your ideas too. (ps- your white vanilla carmel cake sounds good, did you use the vanilla carmel liquid creamer to make it, or am I way off here?)
yes, the white carmel vanilla carmel cake is the one with coffe creamer, it rocks!!
the recipe, is as follows: white cake, add 2tbs of vanilla carmel....
wonderful!
