Boy did I over-commit! Not only did I contract to do the wedding and groom's cake, I also agreed to do the flowers for the wedding party, including the boutionnier's and corsages. This included 6 maid of honor arm bouquets, the brides bouquet, 6 boutionnier's and 3 corsages. I work a full-time job...I don't know what possessed me to agree to this. She was another nurse in need, I guess! I did the groom's cake on Thursday evening (see Very Fat Fish in my photos). Needless to say, I did nothing but flowers Friday afternoon and evening until around 11:30 pm when I fell into the bed. Saturday morning began at 8:00 as the wedding wasn't until 3:00 pm and of course, the cakes were all baked and frozen. Just had to put them together, ice, cover with fondant, stack and decorate. Nothing that couldn't be done in a couple of hours!! Ha! All was going well until I tried to knead the MMF that I made a few days prior. It totally crumbled to pieces. I tried adding water...it got sticky. I tried adding cornstarch...it crumbled again. I started to cry!
OMG...I have to remake the fondant and get the color just right...again! Luckily I had plenty of MM fluff in my pantry. I had called a friend to come over to help with a couple of things and she set me straight. She told me to stop crying...it wasn't helping anything. She asked me if I had what I need to make the fondant...I nodded as I sniffed...and she said, "Well, get moving then!" I have never made fondant so fast. She stayed and helped me roll and lift it onto the tiers...a 14", 10" and 6"...and those suckers were 5" high by the time they were torted and iced. I transported them to the reception site naked to avoid losing flowers and leaves along the way. When I got there, the only place I had to put it together was on top of the washer and dryer in the home in which the reception was being held. One of the gentlemen caterers carried it to the cake table and, in the process, wiggled it enough to separate the very quickly piped beads. I had to take those off and redo...the photo was taken prior to the "redo". I stepped away from the completed cake 7 minutes before the first guest arrived. How many lessons did I learn this weekend? A WHOLE BUNCH!! Well here's the finished product:
Beautiful cake. Your weekend sounds like mine, only your cake had a happy ending!
This cake is gorgeous!!! I am sure that the bride was very happy with it! I really like the color as well! Lavendar is my FAVORTIE color (and then pink
)
How did everything else turn out? (sorry if this is already posted...it's early, i should be getting ready for work, but I have to have my morning fix of CC and i haven't read all the other posts).
