Does anyone know how to do the plaster method on cakes.

Let me bump you... I'm sorry I can't help, but I've never heard of the plaster method.

I'm sorry it took so long to get back here. Here is a link to the cake I'm talking about. It looks like there are lines in the buttercream.

it is called the petal cake in gallery #2 of wedding cakes.

It looks like the buttercream was iced on and then a spatula was used to slide up and down on a diagonal to give the pattern. It reminds me of pictures of cakes I see in cookbooks from the 1950's. It also doesn't look like a crusting buttercream was used, maybe more of a meringue-type icing.

I agree, that looks like the cakes my aunt used to make. The spatula was moved in a figure8 wave-type pattern over the final coat of buttercream.
