Ok, I really would like to try a fall cake idea using maple leaves in traditional fall colors. I looked in the galleries under fall cakes and found some REALLY CUTE ideas (of which I added them to my favorites) however, they all seemed to use fondant to make the leaves.

Now, I am new at this and have NO EXPERIENCE with fondant and really don't have time right now to try and learn something new. (Wilton III is going to have to wait until fall semester is over). Does anyone have any suggestions on how to do a "fall theme" cake w/o having to use fondant?

Thanks to all for your help!!!

MMF is so easy to make and easy to work with, you shouldn't be afraid to try it. With some leaf cutters, I don't think it would be a problem for you.

I find BCI leaves to be a pain to make! I guess if you did larger leaves, make an outline and fill that in would work. Another possibility would be doing the leaves in chocolate transfers. Janice

I just did a fall cake for a halloween party today. I will post pics soon, but I got some fake leaves from the craft store and melted chocolate and dipped the leaves in that. Once the chocolate was hard, I peeled the leaves off. That was a little challenging because many chocolate leaves broke as I peeled the fake leaves off. It was my first time working with the chocolate, but all in all I think it went pretty well.

I too was "afraid" of fondant!! I have been decorating cakes for 20 years and just starting working with fondant a year ago!! I just made a fall cake the other day with fondant leaves. I used a clay mould that I bought at Hobby Lobby. I just kneaded the colors I wanted into the fondant and pushed them into the mould. I put them in the freezer for a few minutes and then took them out layed them on wax paper and used a dry paint brush and brushed them with luster dust. Everyone thought they were awesome and they only took a few minutes to make!!!

Don't be afraid to play with the fondant, even if you don't cover your cake with it you can make a lot ot neat decorations with them and stick them on a cake iced with buttercream!

Have fun experimenting!

Here's how I do bc fall leaves: Put a #352 tip on a bag, put a little of each of these colors of bc icing in the bag: green, chocolate, orange--push the icing down to the tip and squeeze out leaves. If you put the tip at a 75 degree angle, you can raise the pointed end of the leaf higher off the cake. You can use different colors of bc. Practice several and see what you come up with. I think you'll enjoy the effect. Sorry, don't have a digital camera to send you pictures.

I just did this last night! I'll be uploading pics later tonight or tomorrow, but I had mixed success.

First, I used real leaves as a gallery photo showed, but while they looked real and while peeling the leaf of the chocolate was fairly easy (need to use fresh leaves), they picked up the oils from the tree leaves and they tasted so bitter. After taking the photo, I took them off the cake and threw them away.

I also bought some fake leaves from the craft store (they are on big sale now) and I did two leaves and both of them cracked when I tried to peel back the leaf. I think next time I'll put shortening on the leaf to see if they will release easier.

I'll be interested to see what others do I prefer the real chocolate look of a realistic leaf better than the MMF or other fondant leaves.
