this maybe?
4 x 4in rounds stacked and doweled
sports ball on top for body of tree top -- supported w/ dowels
whole cake doweled all the way thru.
top covered in leaves cut from fondant.
small balls of red fondant stuck to top w/ toothpicks for apples
icing roots (or could be molded fondant)
some fondant apples laying around the ground too.
toss in an animal fondant figure or two if up to the challenge.
----------------------------
or could take cue from DUFF and build up an internal metal support and make whole thing out of rice crispie treats and stick on top of sheet cake covered to look like grass.
Thanx so much for everyone's ideas! Doug, loved the drawing! I was thinking about melting candy melts, or regular chocolate, then pouring it into "trenches" in cocoa powder for the roots. I saw this on The Food Network once when someone was making a huge chocolate tree. The melted chocolate sets up in the cocoa powder trenches, and when it's hardened, you have what resembles a tree branch. I think it was on (Warren Clark?) show about cakes a few months ago- the name escapes me... LOL . Again, thanx for the input!! B.
