What Is Filigree?

CAn someone tell me what filigree is? Is it the stringwork that sicks out from a cake?

what i understand , dont quote me, but i think its like a fondant, but dries REALLY hard and is moldable?

i hope someone else can help.. id like to know a bit more about it

The stringwork that sticks out from a cake is normally called extension work (that's what we call it here anyway) Filigree is where you pipe a design on parchment or something similar (the piping is similar to cornelli but the squiggles need to touch so it can hold together) and when it dries you have a panel of piped design some people make churches or other things out of them by sticking the panels together. There are some examples (these are not my cakes I found them in the gallery)

Filigree is the word for ornate detailed scroll work. Sometimes it is simple, other times it resembles fine lace. It can be piped onto a cake, or in royal to dry and stick out on a border and such.
