make real icing that is easy to make and use......I looked in the recipes but there are alot of different kinds (who knew). I have been lurking on this site for a while now and obviously I am a total beginner. My youngest DD's b day is in less than a week and I really want to not use the canned stuff on her cake. Any help would be much appreciated.

I make buttercream icing. I use 1 bag of powdered sugar (2lbs), one cup of criso, 1 teaspoon of flavoring and between 3/4 to 1 cup water.

Search the recipe section in CC, I think you will find what you need. Here is a link to one buttercream recipe that is fairly easy.

Good luck!

The basic Wilton bc recipe is a very good one for beginners.

Good Luck to you!

I've used the Dream Whip icing with great success. I like it because it's not "hurt your teeth" sweet.

Here's a thread with the recipe and ease of use comments;

I really like the Wilton bc recipe--1/2 crisco and 1/2 butter. I like it. I went to the store the other day and thought about buying canned stuff for the fall fair and went to reach for it(it is cheap) and I just could not. Wilton b/c recipe is easy and I think it takes good. I add vanilla and almond flavoring to it. You could use peppermint or whatever you want.

I use buttercream frosting, a recipe I found on the web years ago. Here it is:

2 cups Crisco (I buy the prepackaged 1 cup blocks)
1 bag 10x sugar
1 1/2 tsp clear vanilla
1/4 tsp salt
7 oz heavy cream

In mixer with paddle attachment, mix Crisco until light and fluffy (about 5 min). Add in 1/2 bag sifted 10x sugar. Mix well, scraping sides periodically. Add in rest of sugar, sifting before adding to mixture. Once sugar is incorporated well, add salt, vanilla and 2 oz heavy cream. Mix well then scrape sides and bottom very well. Slowly add the rest of the heavy cream. Once it is all in, mix for about 5 minutes uninterrupted.

You may decide that you need to add more heavy cream, or not add as much. I play around with it every time I make it. Sometimes I add 8 oz or only use 6 oz, depending on what I am using it for.

The first time I made this recipe, it took me an hour, but Ive streamlined it to about 10-15 minutes!

Good luck. I think if you save a few recipes that you seem to like, try them at different times then decide which one you like the best for cake decorating.
