Hey, I did this sketch this morning for a KISS cake for a rehearsal dinner for a couple who wanted a fun cake and loves the band. But I can't decide on a topper. I'm leaning toward the stars on the left of my sketch. What do y'all think?

Plus I have a LAUNDRY list of questions:

1) This cake is going to be 2-layer 8, 10 and 12-inch rounds. Do you think the 17-inch scrollwork stand will be strong enough? This baby is going to be 3-feet high! How much does cake weigh anyway?

2) I want to make black and red MMF. Any recommendation on the best kind of color to buy?

3) Should I put fondant cutouts on the sides of the cake, like stars and lightning bolts, or would it be too busy?

4) When you use a plastic separator plate, do you still put a cardboard circle under your cake?

5) I want one border to look like a spiked collar. How would I make spikes? And what color should I make them if I wanted to paint them with silver lustre dust?

6) I found a KISS font online. How do I "tile" something on my printer, so it prints out in 4-pages that you merge together?

Good news: AC Moore has Wilton non-character pans 50 percent off this week, plus a 40 percent coupon. Can you say shopping??

I don't have the answer to ANY of your questions as I am still way to new to this fun and addicting hobby, however, I'll give you a bump.

To complicate things, apparently KISS "action figures," which is what I want to put between the tiers, are roughly 7-inches tall. Do I use higher pillars and make it even taller or should I switch to a stacked design and put all four guys on top?

I think the topper would be cute with mixing the hearts...lightning bolts and stars.....instead of adding them to the cakes...very cute idea all of it!!

about the figures...can you sit them?

Mixing them! What a great idea! Thank you!

I don't know yet, the sister of the bride is supposed to be swiping them from the groom-to-be without him knowing. We want to surprise them.

I've been sketching it to scale and either stacked or tiered, the dolls look out of proportion. Stacked the cake would be 12 inches tall. At 8 inches, the dolls are almost as tall as the cake. Tiered might look strange too, having four inches of cake, then 8 inches of doll, then four inches of cake again.

Is there any rule of thumb about how tall your tiers should be in relation to how tall your cake is?

I had trouble reading a lot of the notes on the sketch so sorry if I have gotten the wrong end of the stick but were you going to use just two pillars on each tier with a figurine in front of it? I would be nervous about that (I've only ever seen a minimum of 3, but usually 4) I think I would either

1)go for a stacked cake with the figurines on top

2) or if you really want the pillars maybe you could stack the first 2 tiers and then use the pillars (4 of them with one figurine in front of each pillar) for the final tier (although I haven't tried the second option before maybe someone else could comment as about if it would work - although being the smallest, lightest tier it seems like it could work)

I think cut out a strip of black for the band and then use white for the spikes since it is going to be covered in lustre dust. I can't think of a quick and easy way to make the spikes without some kind of mould (keep a look out for something in your kitchen or elsewhere that is hollow and pointy that you could squish the icing into would save a heap of time) but if you get a small piece of gumpaste and pinch it at one end then gently roll the pinched edge on the bench to try to get it an even point and then slice the non-pointy end with a knife to get a clean flat edge and repeat for each spike and stick it on with the flat edge against the black band.

HTH with some of your queries icon_smile.gif

Just read the other posts - if you are worried about proportion then you could always make the figures out of gumpaste - it is a lot more work but it would solve the proportion issue. They don't have to be 100% realistic could be a stylised version but you would need to get the make-up right.

Love the cake idea. Can't wait to see the finished project. For the spikes (per my husband) take one of your icing tips insert saran wrap in the tip and then fill with fondant or gumpaste then you can pull out the saran wrap and viola!!! of course it may need some fine tuning but the overall shape should be there.

Good luck!!! icon_biggrin.gif

Great design. I wil agree with making the figures if the plastic are too big. I've been using the fondant/gumtex mix lately for my forming and it holds nicely. And if you have the action figures to look at then it would make it much easier. And for the spikes are you dry lustering with the silver? I mix the silver with a little lemon emulsion and paint when I want it really silver.

you have a mold for the spikes.....decorating tips!!!!

or could just roll them from fondant....start w/ ball and then roll so it becomes a pointy cone...flatten bottom and let harden.

or coud pipe them out of royal icing.

Hey, I finally finished the cake. Check out my gallery. Thank you all for your help! You rock! Get it, rock? Hah!

Unfortunately I had to scrap the flames. They came out great, red and yellow and orange marbled fondant, but when I was setting the cake up OUTSIDE and in 100 PERCENT HUMIDITY, the poor things started sweating and were literally wet to the touch. I was scared to put them on the cake. I don't think they would have stood up at all.

Thank you, thank you!

And, the icing on the cake, so to speak, is that DH and DC (dear children) spent the night at the in-laws last night so I got to sleep in this morning! I'm all alone in my wrecked house (the kitchen may never be the same!), drinking coffee and reveling in the silence!

Here's the link to the font:

http://www.kissfanshop.de/Fonts/DieNastyUSA.htm

You download it into Microsoft Word and you can type anything you want. You write a whole letter in KISS lettering. Fun!

I kept thinking Duff would be proud. I emailed the pics to charmcity cakes. We'll see if they respond.

Thanks for the font link, I saved it everywhere ...lol

I, for one would love to know what they write back! Good luck and thanks..but before I leave, one more question.

I am assuming that you printed out your word and then used it as a pattern to cut the letters out? the letters look amazing and have no distortion whatsoever!

or did you do it some other way?

I emailed it to the KISS site and to Duff, I'll let y'all know if I hear back.

I made a template by tracing the letters onto thin plastic and then used that to cut them out.
