Could anyone tell me what causes the little hairline cracks to appear in the buttercream icing that has been smoothed with towel method.

how warm has it been for you? this usualy happens for me if its been too warm during the icing of the cake or after/ and especialy if this is the case and its been moved also.

Sometimes you can get those little cracks if your cakeboard wasn't sturdy enough!

Also, if you had just a few drops of vinegar to your BC, it should help..don't know why..just does!

If you don't have good support under your cake, it will bend and produce cracks. Even if you don't think you've moved it much, you can still produce plenty of cracks. Too much meraingue pwdr can make it too dry also.

the lil cake boards they sell for sheet cakes are no good if you have to transport the cake from where u made it in any way
... i use them but only as the initial one then i cut 2 more from thick cardboard boxes to reinforce and make a "cake drum" pressing them together with tape and then wrapping as usual

its a cheap solution....along with the couple drops of vinegar...
and problem solved

Thanks for the tips. I had wondered if it was changes in temp...after I ice the cakes I keep them in a room that is pretty cold...but when I bring them back to the kitchen to decorate, maybe going from cool to warm affects them. I will start using stronger cake boards and will try the vinegar.
