I have a birthday party for a very sweet woman who is turning 80 this coming saturday(I'm throwing as a suprise with my mom). there will be about 60 people coming ruffly. I've been kind of lost on what to do when I got the invite in the mail today (I didn't work on this part)

it states towards the end: Light refreshments will be served with culinary delights prepared by Melissa Kolmar

Say what? icon_confused.gificon_surprised.gificon_eek.gif When did this happen, I mentioned a Cake!!!!! Now what do I do????? I don't want to look like a total jerk that doesn't do something wonderful.

As far as I'm concerned a cake is a "culinary delight" and I've looked at your photos, and your cakes look great!

Did you have a plan for the cake, if you did, maybe just expand on it a little. If not, does the invitation have anything that you could use as a theme?

Let us know what you decide to do, I'm sure it will be wonderful. Janice

the theme is a victorian tea. She also wears a hat almost all the time!. I am thinking of trying to do a cake that looks like a hat......just don't know though.

It's ok, Melissa- take a deep breath. The way I see it, the "light refreshments" (drinks, possibly an appetizer) will be served by someone else, and the "culinary delight" (your lucious, beautiful cake) will be from you. The sweet woman who is turning 80 will be absolutely thrilled with whatever you do! Good luck, and your cakes are beautiful!

How about Petit Fours or small tea cakes?

If you did small tea cakes in different sizes/flavors, that would go with the theme and be "culinary delights"

perhaps you could do one "theme" cake and then a big sheet cake to feed the crowd? I think the invitation doesnt put anymore pressure on you to do more...a cake is a culinary delight!

What about a teapot cake on top of an 8 or 10 inch round made to look like a table w/ tablecloth...then a small hat and gloves made of fondant sitting to one side of the table?

I think the hat theme is a nice idea.. Your cakes are beautiful so don't stress out over this.. I am sure she will be thrilled with your cake..Looking forward to seeing the finished cake.

I think what I would do is contact your mom or the person who sent out the invitations and find out what exactly they meant by "culinary delights". That way if they wanted something more than cake, then you can put that ball back in their court so to speak. Explain that you are happy to do the cake (culinary delights by you), but anything else will have to be done by someone else.

I think a hat cake would be lovely and some petit fours to complement the hat and victorian tea theme and add servings. Have fun with it whatever you decide to do!

well I talked to my mom and my pastors wife (who I guess now is also helping which is fine with me---she's helping out with the cost and set up) They were thinking of different cake flavors and a few different kinds of truffles (if I have the time for the truffles) They said I can do anything I want as long as I make 1 choc. coconut burbon cake with ganache.

I found out her fav. cake is white cake. Should I make the white almond sour cream cake or a plain white cake? I plan on using a fruit filling to pair it with. I then will stack on top a lemon-poppy seed cake with either lemon curd or a raspberry filling.

This lady loves different flavors of cake to try so I was thinking of may be also a spice cake with apple filling and cinnamon frosting, or a choc. with carmel and heath filling or a vanilla chai cake with cinnamon buttercream???? Can you tell my mom and the pastors wife has mentioned every cake I listed on this post today! That's too much cake, what would you all make?

ps- If I can make scones without eating them all, I will, but only if they can be made in advance! I have never done a small tea cakes, but hey ....keep the ideas coming, I'm willing to try anything about now.

the chocolate coconut burbon cake for sure....full size as show piece.

then how about several different small square/round or 9x13 cakes in various flavors (for efficiency start w/ basic yellow or white or both batters -- divide into parts and flavor each differently) -- cut these smaller cakes into small single "tasting" portions (no larger than wedding cake servings (1x2) and ice w/ poured fondant or ganache -- sort of like "not-so-petit" fors. could put each in a pretty paper or foil cupcake liner and arrange around the main showpiece cake.

Doing the choc.coconut burbon cake and then a decorated cake as a teapot or hat. I'll do the little small cakes that doug described to do on the side with also some cake balls. I'm not doing the truffles though that's just too much! Thanks for all the help, I have a holloween party that night for all the kids in the family so I really want to do the small cakes or cookies with the kids and let them decorate them.
