I am going to work with fondant for the first time, and I was wondering how to go about coloring white fondant-or if it is just easier to buy the pre-colored kind (like the Satin Ice colored fondant)? Thanks!

I've only used it a couple of times myself but I used the wilton icing color and just added little bits at a time with a toothpick and kneaded.

If you are using a large amount-like covering a cake, it is sometimes easier to buy colored. If you are only using the fondant for decoration on a BC cake, then buy white and just color small portions at a time. If you are making your own and covering a cake, color the MMF before the powdered sugar goes in.

Go ahead and knead it, it's not that bad. I found coating your rolling mat and hands with Crisco makes the fondant more pliable. People either use Crisco or corn starch to keep it from sticking to their mat, but the cornstarch seems to dry it out to me.

Search the recipe area for Marshmallow Fondant or MMF. You make it with marshmallows and powdered sugar. I tried it for the first time this weekend and really liked it. With it, you mix in the color after you melt the marshmallows but before you mix in the powdered sugar. Viola! No kneading!

I used Crisco with the MMF too. Nuked it for 10 seconds to get it pliable and then rolled away.

Have fun!

Another tip, wear gloves when you are kneading in the colors, otherwise you will have very colorful hands. Janice

Those Wilton four-packs of pre-colored bother me. Those packets are so small for what you pay!

One more tip: Pull out the size chunk you need and keep the rest wrapped wrapped in plastic so it doesn't dry out.

My hubby was thrilled when I told him I could make a batch of MMF for $2 versus paying $5-$15 for Wilton.

How much does a MMF batch weigh anyway?

I just made a batch of MMF using the alternative recipe (the one with 1/3c Crisco), and I weighed it as I needed different amounts to colour - the whole thing weighed 2kg (over 4lbs)!!! Bargain!

Seriously!

Have you ever made black or red MMF? What do you think would be the best color (brand) to use?

What's the MMF alternative recipe?

I agree with Mqguffey, not nly are the Wilton packs small, but I don't think they taste good at all! I haven't made MMF yet, I'll have to give it a try.

The recipe for alternative MMF can be found here:

I also add 1 tbsp glycerine to the recipe, it really helps prevent cracking and drying out.

I have coloured MMF red & black, I always use Americolor and they are really very good. Hope that helps!

I just bought Satin Ice brand fondant in red and its a really nice color. A good bold bright red. It tastes better that Wilton but not as good as MMF. And of course, more expensive than MFF as well.
