What Do You Use To Wrap Dummy Cakes?
Decorating By momsandraven Updated 13 Jul 2005 , 8:13pm by Tazalexis
Hi!
I bought some pink insulating foam board last weekend to cut into dummy cakes so I can practice and work on building up my photo portfolio. My question is, what do I wrap the dummy cakes in for easy clean up? Foil? Plastic wrap? Will I have problems with the frosting sticking to the foil or plastic wrap? Any tips? I'm really excited about getting started on this. I've been dying to practice without having all of that cake around!
I'm not sure momsandraven .. I know when we had the DOS, we covered the syrofoam dummy with saran and then put the MMF over that .. it worked ok.. It would kind of slip a bit, but we still got it to work.. I'd think maybe a person could use saran, but I'm not sure if you could with BC
Best tip I saw ( I just ordered dummies this week) was to put the clear wrap - for book covers- over the dummy because it has an adhesive on one side and it is smooth on the other. Then when you are finished decorating, you can wipe if off easily!! Sounded good to me and I can't wait to try it!!
I personaly always wrap it with seran wrap. Make sure you wrap it tight though, and you use a pin to get out all of those air bubbles, or they show through when you try to smooth out that buttercream. Make sure you put the BC on thick though (you can always take more off) Sometimes it wants to slip a little. I was thinking of trying the Press N' Seal next time b/c it isn't quite as slick but would still be easy to take off.
This has always worked well for me b/c I just unwrap it save any icing I can and then throw the rest away. I just unwrap it over a garbage can or a garbage box i have handy.
Any questions let me know.

P.S. I also recommend using small pins to connect your cake board to your Dummy cake (from the bottom of your board up into your "cake") It doesn't sound like much but it is a life saver so your "cake" won't slip on the board.
Also I suggest using a non slip mat (like the shelf liners-small roll at W-M for under $5.00) underneath your cake. You don't have the weight to hold it down onto your turn table or your countertop while icing, it helps keep it in place.
Thank you for all of the great tips!
Lots of things I wouldn't have considered!! I think I'll start off trying the Press 'n Seal, since I have some here.
Taz- are you talking about clear contact paper?
Thanks again!!

Yes, i was talking about the clear contact paper. i actually received my dummies today and I left work for a long time (almost got in trouble) looking for the contact. The reason why contact sounds better than seran wrap is because the fact that it's not secure!! But whatever is easier for you, is better for you!!
