Good morning ladies. I need someone to save my tail once again!

I want to pipe silver letters on the top of a box. I tried mixing lustre dust, actually crushed cake sparkles, with piping gel but it just looks gray. I've read about mixing the dust with alcohol for painting, but it seems that would be too watery for piping. Any ideas??

Oh yeah, and the cake is due in three hours!

Well, for starters cake sparkles and luster dust are too different things.

Don't know if this will work for you cause i don't use the sparkles, just the dusts. But if you have crushed them fine enough it may work.

Try piping on the words with a crusting type of icing, either buttercream or royal will work, what ever you have available. Then after its well crusted take a soft paint brush and brush the color on. Either dry or mixed with alcohol, dry will give a lighter softer effect wet will give you are darker effect.

So what is lustre dust like? Where can I get it? We've got Michael's, AC Moore, Hobby Lobby.

Those dont carry it unfortunatley. You have to find a cake supply place or order online. luster is super fine and give a cool metalic finish.

I don't think you'll find luster dust in any of those stores. You'll need to get them from a "real" cake supply store, or order online.

I get mine locally, so I'm not sure where the best place is to get them online, but someone will be along to post, I'm sure. In the meantime, you can do a search on the forums for luster dust, and you'll find several recent posts about the best way to use it, and where to buy.

hth!

I'm definitely going to have to hunt for that!

I ended up using silver shimmer dust on the bow, just brushing it with water and sprinkling on the dust. The "tissue paper" has clear cake sparkles. I dusted some silver on the buttercream letters but it didn't work as well as I had hoped. If I had it to do over, I would have used the pearl shimmer instead of the silver because the silver that landed on the fondant looked like gray smudges!

But I'm on a mission for REAL lustre dust now. Those cakes look awesome!

Well I think it came out great. i think the shimmer is a really nice look on this design. I am not sure that the luster would have looked as nice on this particular cake. Two thumbs up!!
