I am making a carousel cakes for my daughter's first birthday. I was going to make the top "dome" part out of fondant, by rolling it into a circle and then cutting it into eight wedges.

The top cake is going to be a 6" round...

How big of a circle of fondant should I roll?

I did a 10" because I wantedit to be kind of tall, but now I am second guessing myself. I am afraid that it won't line up right, or that the fondant will hang over the edge of the cake.

HELP!!!!

It all depends on how tall your cake mold is. For example, if it is an 6' mold by 3' tall. You should roll the fondant by twelve. 6 + 3 (tall) +3 (tall). Or maybe a little more so you can be sure that it all covers.

How are you drying it? Seems like you would have to form it on a bowl or a ball or something to keep the dome shape. Pick something that has a 6in diameter. That way you can see if it's going to be too long and trim it as needed. If you have the wilton sports ball pan that might be a good thing to use.

The wilton sports ball pan does have a 6 inch diameter so it would be perfect to use to dry the fondant in a round shape if you wanted to do it that way. And you could also measure from the very center of the "dome" of the pan down to the edge to see how long your wedges need to be.

There isn't actually going to be cake under the dome... It is similar to the carousel cake in the 2007 yearbook. But I can't find anywhere to by the book with the patterns... And I can't wait to order it online.

I know how to attach it, I just can't figure out how big to make it...
