I read somewhere else that someone layed wax paper over the back when she was finished and smoothed it wih her hands. Never tried it just thought I'd share. Also TexaSugar posted a link to her method of doing a FBCT. It made a little more sense to me, I'll see if I still have it somewhere.
Thanks, is just that the instructions are not too clear. Because it only says to smooth out the back after you finish..but I was thinking how do you do that, you would have to turn the design around. The instructions do not indicate to let the design dry a little. Thank you for the feedback!
I found the tutorial on here a little confusing too. I'm one of those people who have to hear things put a couple different ways before it clicks. This one happened to be the one that "clicked" for me.

MMDD; I'm trying to understand the process; On the instructions it tells you to outline the desing on wax paper..then fill it the buttercream, and after you are done smooth out the back of the design.
I don't get the smooth part. How can you smooth out the back of the design?
The only way is by letting it dry, but the instructions do not say that.
It sounds weird but if you outline and fill then gently smooth out the back of the design, it doesn't smear together, it really does just smooth it all together.
After that, I do cover the entire back with a coating of the same color frosting that my cake will be and then smooth again. (Smooth lightly and nothing will smear underneath - I promise! I didn't believe it at first either...) This helps give the whole transfer some thickness, making it less likely to break and will also prevent any color bleed onto your cake.

cuchy - you're working in layers right.I just did Tinkerbelle so I'll use her for an example. So the outline is the first layer then say the cheek color or lips then the skin color for the face being your top layer. You can then cover the entire thing with a layer of icing that matches the icing on the cake (I haven't done this before but many do) Then you can smooth it with a spatula or put wax paper over the top and smooth it with your hands. The idea behind smoothing it is to gently push the frosting so you don't have air bubbles or holes and so it'll lay flat when you put it on the cake. - Does that make sense? Definately go check out the link I posted, it was a little easier to follow.

When i'm done I have to peel it off and flip it....and thats the side that shows on the cake.

ooh, ooh, oohh! I can help with this one! I'm glad to be able to help instead of asking, yet, another question.
I just did my first FBCT this week. I have made 4 now. If you look at my gallery you can see 3 of them. My Tink that is on there with Hello kitty got a bit "pudgy" when I smoothed her. I guess I pushed a little too hard or something. Her arms look like Popeye arms, if you look close!
OK, I do the thing with putting the wax paper over the entire thing after you've filled in and added the top layer of icing (all one color) over the entire thing. Then, I take my fondant smoother and rub and push down EASILY! (As I pushed a little too hard on Tink, but she still is ok). I don't use my hand because I felt like it was smoothing it unevenly. If you don't have a fondant smoother, use something else...like a small rolling pin--easy though...or the bottom of a soup bowl or something flat and smooth.
If you try one, and it needed a little more smoothing, you will know to push and smooth a little more on the next one. If you practice, you can get the idea of how it all works and what to do to make it better next time.

Don't peel it off and then filp it. I would flip it onto the cake while it was still on the wax paper and then peel it off. Less handling.
