I have three questions about foam core boards
1. Are these the boards that can be purchased at Michaels, Hobby Lobby, etc. in rectangular shape? If so, thats great because that's what I bought
2. Do they have to be covered with something to use them because I have used these boards a couple of times between stacked layers because I like the white edge as opposed to the brown edge of cardboard but they absorb grease, is that normal?
3. What is the best way to cut them? Because I always get a jagged edge
Thanks for any advice.

I read on one of these discussions that a hot craft knife will cut it without leaving the edge ragged.

1. yes!

2. i dont cover them if they are the base for a stacked cake. i wipe them clean with a quick rub of vodka to sanitize them. yes, its normal for them to absorb oils from the icings. if you want to use them as your cake base that is visible and larger than the cake, then i would recomend covering it with wilton fancy foil (better than regular aluminum foil, less crinkle, less reflection) , wrapping paper and then contact paper, fondant or royal icing (allowed to dry before setting your decorated cake on top.).

3. use a hot knife. i bought mine from michaels for around $12. its an electrical exacto knife that heats up and slices through like butter. you'll have to replace the blade tips every now and then, but it really is a good investment. saves so much time and makes nicer cuts.

I usually cut mine and then cover with freezer paper if doubled (2 layers glued together for strength) or press'n'seal for a single layer.

I cover them with contact paper and use a heated exacto knife to cut it. This prevents the jagged edges.

Definitely invest in one of those hot knives!
The foam boards come in 2 sizes also.

If the custom Framing is not busy in Michael's they will cut the sizes you need at the time of you purchasing the foam core. It's policy to charge $1 a cut but the two stores I've worked in have been known not to charge for it when you are nice about it and if you hit them up when they are slow.

If you get them at a busy time they may have you leave it and take an order for the cuts.

Another thing... if you want to use the foam core to it's best extent you can always bring a ruler and mark out the entire board for how you want the cuts done so they know eactly where to cut.

You can also use a mat cutter (40% of coupon!). They start around $20 and you can do your own clean cuts. I don't know if what they sell is a beveled cut (angled) so look into that before you purchase. I work tomorrow and can look at what they carry and tell you exactly the cost and what you need if you want.

Thanks for all the great advice everyone, that's what I love about this site you can ask a question and get it answered simply and honestly.
CarolynGwen, thanks for offering to check at the store for me I would love for you to do that, I was in Michaels today and used my coupon, but they already had another one in the flyer for next week too. so I will get it on Saturday.
Here's a funny.
When I went to the register the guy cashier asked me which item I wanted to use the coupon on ( I had 2, $4 items and a $20 item icon_rolleyes.gif)
Have a great day everyone!

you can make a beveled cut with the hot knives pretty easily. i bought one several months ago and just recently started using it. i dont know why i waited so long...it really simplifies the whole process. i've not just cut straight edges, but also rounds, petals etc....
