After reading another posting about castle cakes, I'm worried. I was planning to make a castle cake this weekend, and I'm very new at this. I've never had to dowel my cakes before (this would be the first) but I do know how. I just did not think this one would need to be doweled. Please tell me if you think I need to dowl a cake with a 9x9 square bottom, 8x8 round top and 5 cupcakes with ice cream cones.

I would definitely use dowels (personally I use plastic straws). It's a quick and easy thing to do and you would be really bummed if you didn't do this simple step and your cake got ruined. Better safe than sorry!

You could maybe get away without a dowel. But castles tend to be a bit top heavy - because you have that 2nd layer and then you're adding cupcakes and coated cones. So they like to slide.

Better safe than sorry.
