Okay, made a purple bow out of gumpaste for a gift cake. The cake is due today and so I dyed the fondant straps which will go down the sides of the cake using the same color of purple gel. However, the fondant has a definite bluish tint to it and doesn't match.

Is there a reason for this? Shouldn't white fondant and white gumpaste be the same when dyed with the same color?

Ooh, so sorry this happened to you! There are a lot of threads regarding purple stuff turning blue- I think it has to do with a reaction between the food color and the ingredients used in the icing/fondant.

Do you have time to paint the bow with some food color thinned out a little with lemon extract or a high-proof liquor? The higher the alcohol content, the faster it will dry. Good luck!

Thanks for the info- so frustrating! I haven't put the straps on yet...so I'm either just going to have the bow and no straps or keep playing with the color some more--or brush the color on like you said.
