I'm making a cake for the neighborhood playground Grand Opening. What is the best material to use to build the equipment. RI or Gumpaste. I'm looking to use something that will get hard but will not break apart. I will be building the rock wall, swingset & sliding board. I will start tonite because the opening is saturday.

I was think that also. Any ideas on what to use to actully have the swings swinging. Do you think gumpaste made into links will work. I wan't to put children on the swings. Or I'm I pushing it?

what if you tie string licorice to the top pole and to the swings so they can move and swing.

And make sure that when you make the items out of gumpaste that you add extra tylose or gum-tex to the gumpaste so that it dries faster and on time for you. In fact, I would probably go with a 50/50 mix of gumpaste/fondant with the tylose still added to the mix. Can't wait to see the pics! thumbs_up.gif

Here's a picture of what I'm going for. I going to downsize do to using a 1/2 sheet cake. I was going to use prezel rods for the poles and attach everything with RI. Can I do this the same day about an hour before the opening or a day before? Please let me know what you think.

RI takes several hours to dry depending on the thickness of the icing. I would definitely start put the infrastructure together the morning before at the latest. Especially since you have time for repairs should anything break or fall apart before you put it on the cake. The gumpaste needs to be done days in advance, especially if you are encountering humidity in your area. If you need any more help, please PM me and I would be happy to offer anymore advice. thumbs_up.gif

Here's my drawing....

I would do the RI tomorrow on parchment paper or wax paper and then assemble it on the morning of.... do the gumpaste parts as soon as you finish the RI. do the slide like you would do a shoe sole (check the tutorial) If you are going to put fondant modeled children on the swings you will have to support them from underneath. You could make the swings out of gumpaste and mold them on the flower formers.... I like the idea of the licorice.

oh yeah for the figure 8 climbing ladder thing do a series of ovals flat on the W or P paper and then assemble them alternating orientation on saturday morning. Make at least one extra of everything. When I did my eiffel tower it dried within a day or so but I made it the week before.... I also made an extra piece of everything but didn't need them!

Thanks for the color coding. I hope I can pull this off. I have made a few pieces already. Tomorrow I will do the RI pieces.
