Grateful Dead And Red Roses - Seriously ??? Lol

I'm doing a groom's cake this weekend for a co-worker. Her fiance is a "deadhead".....I certainly know who the Grateful Dead are (yeah, I'm old. LOL).......but was never a huge fan. Anyway, this friend, co-worker, tells me that supposedly red roses come into play with Grateful Dead (????). She saw somewhere or "thinks" that she saw a cake or something with red roses kind of cascading down the side of the cake ( HUH ?? ) ....LOL I looked in the galleries but only found two GD cakes, none with red roses.
Gonna do some more research on this tonight, but does anyone know anything about this phee-nom ???
Thanks in advance.

So, I just googled Grateful Dead Red Roses and apparently the group had a song once upon a time called RED ROSES FOR ME ?????
Still wondering if red roses are a "big thing" with them. This friend of mine does want me to put the red roses on the cake and I'm thinking....."What the............." Well, alrighty then. ![]()
Bump.....anyone? Ok, I know it's late and most of you are in bed.....so hope some of you can help me on Friday morning.....ooooooh, Friday the 13th !!! ![]()
My cousin is a dead head . . . and yeah, I remember a shirt she had on having red roses on it . . . .go figure, tie dye and red roses. Only a dead head, huh?
Wow, what pictures. !!! Although a little strange in my book, they are very artistic and creative. How about that one with the skeleton faces and grandma with the red roses hair, huh?
I'm getting more fascinated by this .......I wonder what the origin of the red roses "theme" is for them? I'll have to look into this a little more. I'm thinking that rather than do "traditional" type red roses on this cake with the "Steal your Face" logo, I'll do the roses with maybe black and a little gold or something on them (???). Maybe just red with black (??) What do you think???? I'd love to surprise my friend with something really creative and artistic. There will be a couple hundred people at this wedding and what a good way for me to get a little recognition and business, huh?
If you aren't a music buff with the GD maybe research them alittle. I have also listened to them but was not into them as much as OZZY. The pics that patticakesnc posted were great. If you could do a FBCT of one that would be good. I haven't done one but that would be good. The skeleton face one is great
I wish you luck on this one ![]()

I think doing a tye dye swirl cake batter would be a cool effect for the cake. I bet when they cut it everyone would love it. Just an idea.
I went to hippieshop.com and they have such great stuff (lot of junk also) I just love the dancing skeletons with top hats. Thanks for asking this question cause I found alot of great stuff for FBCT's. Can't wait to see what you finally come up with. Skeletons and roses do seem to be everywhere in Grateful Dead memorabilia.
ChefStef (love that name!)
OH, MAN, I wish I would have thought about making the actual cake tie dye. That would have been SO COOL and such a surprise to my friend. Her fiance likes yellow cake, so that's what she wanted. I woke up last night around 1 a.m. and wasn't tired, so I baked the cake. Darn it !! I could rebake it, but don't have the time right now. But thanks for the great suggestion for next time, maybe!!!
I'll post a photo of this cake when I get it done today. My friend had already picked out the "design" from an internet photo - nothing extravagant - I knew I wanted to do a FBCT so didn't want tons of colors swirling in with each other (not sure how I would do that). This one that I'm doing is just red, blue, white and black, so should be pretty easy (the key word there being SHOULD)> LOL
My 50 year old son was a true dyed in the wool Deadhead, followed them everywhere, drove mom crazy. His younger brother nicknamed him "Trippy Trailmix" Now I kind of like their music myself, especially the American Beauty album, love the song Ripple. Now son is a Phish fan and told me since many Dead Heads have gone over to Phish since Jerry Garcia died they came out with hats and tee shirts that say "Steal your fans" instead of steal your face. ![]()
That isn't a skeleton Grandma honey, that's from American Gothic by Grant Wood

Can hardly wait to see what you do on this cake. I made one for my son with a hippie van and the Dead's dancing bears going around the outside of the bus.
Thanks for more ideas, everyone. I will check them all out. The cake is bake and iced, and unfortunately, I think it will end up turning out pretty plain. If I had my way about it, which of course I don't, I'd probably make it funkier than just the "Steal your Face" logo and the red roses - the wedding is tomorrow evening, and I sure don't want to have to discuss any changes on the cake with Carrie at this point. I'm sure she's way too busy for that. She sort of told me to go with "whatever" but I think she meant more in the way of the cake size and filling. She had picked out the logo and wanted red roses......so I'd be too afraid to do something that she just didn't really want.
It's so fun getting ideas from others here .......and then to hear that they are looking forward to seeing MY cake. What an honor (really) !!! If I don't post it, you'll know it turned out REALLY ugly. LOL
I'm glad you went with the steal your face logo, seems to have been (and still is) really popular. I saw it on every site I went to and put on everything including baby clothes. The design and colors are great for an FBCT and will go well with the red roses. Can't wait to see it.
