Hello everyone, I've searched alot here and I can't seem to find what I am looking for. All I need is some info on what to charge to deliver a cake based on mileage. Right now, I deliver for free if local, under 5 miles. I'm not sure what to charge for any other. I have been mostly charging $5 -10, depending on distance. I have a delivery coming up for a 60 mile round trip. Is there a price per mile? Do you charge for the whole distance, to and from site? Thanks a bunch in advance! You all are so great here, I love it!
Anything under 7 miles (pretty much city limits) is included in my pricing already. Anything over the 7 miles as dictated by www.googlemaps.com then it is $0.50/mile BOTH directions.
Now you need to take into consideration how long it takes you to drive 10 miles. For me in my area (country with highways) it takes me about 10 mins. Now if you live in a larger city it could take you 40-50 mins to drive 10 miles depending on traffic and what lights you have to stop at.
So you need to make sure you figure up exactly how much you will be making per hour. Because for me at $0.50 per mile on average I am making $30/hr. but if you were in a large city then you would be making about $15/hr. that is quite a bit of difference, expecially with the price of gas.
At the bakery I work at, we do deliveries up to 2 hours away. Each of the near-by towns, and parks have different prices depending on distance, and difficulty of getting there (quality of roads, etc.). In town is $25 and it goes up from there, the furthest away being $150-$170.
This is for wedding cakes only. For deliveries of party cakes (which we very rarely do) we charge $6-$10 depending on size of cake and distance. Party cakes are only delivered in town.
The pricing difference is based mostly on the stress involved in delivering a wedding cake. Also, so cakes are so big that it requires two people go on a delivery, and the hourly rate each employee is payed for wedding cake deliveries adds up fast.

I charge $5 delivery fee inside of Catawba County (where I'm located.)
Deliveries on orders over $100 (in-county) are free.
ANY deliveries outside of the county are figured on mileage per MapQuest.
I have my mileage chart listed on my website with mile/charge breakdown for everyone to see and know up front.

I dont' deliver small cakes or sheet cakes (neither of which I do very many of anyway). Wedding cakes are free delivery within 30 minutes, based on Mapquest. Outside of 30 minutes STARTS at $50, depending on distance, difficulty in getting there (straight highway or lots of backroads) and the mood I'm in when I give the quote.
As stated above, you're not just covering the gas ... you're covering the payroll of the employees who are driving .... BOTH WAYS. Even if you're the employee, it's an expense that must be factored.
