Buttercream Dream Decorating Questions
Decorating By beauty4151980 Updated 17 Oct 2006 , 5:24pm by beauty4151980
Does coloring the buttercream dream affect its ability to crust? How long should I wait for it to crust before I try to smooth it with a Viva paper towel? Should I try to smooth it with a hot, dry spatula before using the Viva paper towel followed by computer paper? I would like to get the frosting as smooth as possible, but I don't want to overdo it. What's the best way to attach gum paste decorations to the frosting? I apologize for all of the questions, but I'm a decorating newbie!

The recipe has received many good reviews, so I wanted to try to make it for my daughter's first birthday cake.

Let's see if I can help out any:
I think I have waited about 1/2 hour before smoothing. I never timed it, just touch the icing and if it doesn't stick to my finger then I know it's ready. I've used the hot spatula, the viva/computer paper and the foam roller (thanks again Melvira!) on this icing. All three of them worked for me. My fave is the foam roller, followed by the hot spatula, followed by the Viva method. I know some people have a lot of luck ucing Viva and then going over it again with the computer paper. I have attached gumpaste decorations just by putting a dab of buttercream on the backs of them and sticking them to the iced cake. Seems to work well for me. As far as coloring, I haven't noticed an effect on the crusting factor of the icing by coloring it.
