I have an interview Monday morning. They, of course, want to see what I can do. What should I practice this weekend? Do you think they'll want to see the basic grocery store cake.....shell border, roses, rose buds? Will they give me some kind of guidance as to what they're looking for or will I just come up with something? Should I call them to inquire about this or will that look bad? Should I go to the store and see what kinds of cakes they turn out to get an idea? I'm sooooo nervous!!!

You'll do fine. They will want to see your borders, roses, basketweave, and anything else you know. It wouldn't hurt to go by and see what kind of cakes they make. Good Luck and let us know how you do.

When I did my interview they wanted to see that I could ice a cake with no crumbs, get it level looking, have decent/even borders, could make roses, and could write on a cake. And of course could do it at a decent rate of speed. They were very forgiving though, knowing I had not worked in a bakery before and were patient with the time factor for the first few weeks.

First of all, hcromwell, relax. I went through a "first" interview with HR, a "second" interview with store manager and then the bakery manager. He and I went to the bakery, he got me an 8" cake layer and asked me to decorate it any way I wanted. The icings were available in several colors; I used their bags and tips. What they're looking for are "basic" skills: Ice the cake smooth, apply bottom and top borders; do a few flowers (customers ask for roses most often so show them you can do those), leaves and that's it. I filled out on online application. When I was called for a follow-up interview, I took along a copy of my resume and list of references and a album of my best decorated cakes (they seemed to really like this). Plan out how you're going to decorate the top and practice at least once--that top looks so bare when you step up to it and your mind goes blank lol. You'll do fine. Good luck.

Having worked in a bakery of this type you will definitely be able to decorate a cake faster than anyone you know. Its good experience if they let you practice what they hired you for.

i've worked in several grocery store bakeries.

the ones i went to they gave me a cake....left me alone and told me to decorate it.

every single time i was hired....they are usually hurting for decorators....i bet they'll be thrilled with you.

in a grocery store speed is the name of the game....i wouldn't take anything for the experiance i got from it.

be prepared to work every weekend though...thats pretty much required for the decorator.
