Hi Everyone
I am wanting some advice , today I got myself a pasta machine , to make very thin icing and and whatever else I find I can use it for , hair , real looking spaghetti etc, though it does not look like it is going to be easy to clean , it says never put in water and I am wondering will the icing sugar end up rusting the insides if I cant clean it out ,
does anyone have any tips for me and it also came with oil in the rollers that it said to waste some pasta and then keep rolling it through so as to remove the excess oil , is this machine gonna be safe ??? I am a little worried now that I cant whack it in the sink and clean it
Suzy
I'm glad you asked about that because I wonder the same. I have a pasta machine but haven't ever used it for anything more than pasta. I remember the directions saying that you can't get it wet and that doesn't sound very sanitary as I'm supposed to put everything in sanitizer before using in the bakery.
If anyone has the answer, I'm also interested ![]()
Hi Suzy
I have a pasta machine and use it for pasta only. I have never washed it, there realy isn't any need. You use flour around your pasta to stop it from sticking and when you finish with it I just kinda brush it. If you are going to use it for sugar paste I suppose you can use with with corn flour (corn starch)
I hope this helps

I doubt you could use the same machine for pasta and sugar paste because pasta has eggs...I guess if you used it exclusively for sugar paste, it wouldn't be much of a problem since there aren't any potentially hazardous ingredients in it.
I have a pasta machine, originally bought for pasta, then I discovered it was great for icing. What I would do with a new one is run some spare pieces of icing through to pick up any greases etc.. that might be in it. Although remember they are made for the making of pasta anyway, which in itself is a food, so they are pretty safe. The grease is at the ends of the rollers to help them roll. I have used my dishcloth held as if I'm going to roll it through, but held a bit higher, then just roll the rollers around so the cloth cleans them. Hope that made sense.
I have never had a problem with the icing sugar rusting the machine (and I have had it for about 2 years now), but if you are worried, maybe use cornflour, I have found cornflour to be drier. Having said all that, I used icing sugar the first few times, but have since found that I just roll the icing with a rolling pin a little first, to make sure it goes into the machine nicely, then just roll it through. If its nice icing it doesn't stick. I have used this for Bakels pettinice icing and FondX and have found that if they are kneaded properly and not sticking to the table top whilst kneading, they will be fine in the pasta machine without extra icing sugar. Fondx is softer though, so I couldn't roll it as thin, and when I was rolling it through I had to keep moving it out of the way underneath (so it didn't fold onto itself) as it stuck together.
I hope this helps. Sorry its a bit long, my brain is not totally switched on today and when I get like that I waffle on a bit!!! ![]()

I don't know if there are different kinds of pasta machines, but mine is made of metal, and as long as it is wiped, the eggs wouldn't be a problem. They bind into the pasta well and metal doesn't absorb foods. I use my wire whisk to whisk eggs and egg whites, then wash it and use it for buttercream, and I have never had a problem. I know you can't wash the pasta machine as such, but you can wipe the rollers with a warm damp cloth, just don't get lots of water over and in it. ![]()
Thanks for all your great tips
I knew I would find out what I needed here
I was planning on using it just for icing , (though seeing how great they work makes me want to try and make real spaghetti ) but I will get another for home , if I decide that
I will run a cloth through it , that was a brilliant idea , thanks so so much
I cant wait to try a multi coloured bow in it like I saw on here ,
I may also trya nd just use cornflour when using it , as I am sure I have read somewhere that sugar is affected by weather and will rust metal if its stuck in crevices
thanks again
Suzy
