Hi everyone, I have been checking out this great site the last few day and think I am in love... icon_lol.gif
I took the WIlton classes about 3 years ago and really enjoyed y time out of the house and learning something new. I'm a SAHM so getting out of the house was a big plus icon_lol.gif
I was thinking of taking some more cake decorating classes but don't think I need to repeat the ones I have already took. So I went to another place in town and they want $35 and hour icon_eek.gif , they only do private lessons.

I am just wondering if it would be worth it? I am thinking I can get a couple books I have seen mentioned on here in one of the threads and learn on my own a lot cheaper. But am wondering what all of you think?
Are lessons worth it if you already know the basics?

If you are a person that learns best by seeing then classes may be a good thing for you. If you can do by reading a book, then that may be the best way to go.

I would find out what they teach. Even if it is something you have already learned you may learn a different way to do it, or a way that works better for you.

What do do you get for the $35? Do they supply anything or do you have to bring all your supples?

Me personally if there were othet classes in my area, I would take them, even though I have been a WMI for 3+ years now. To me there is always room to learn new things. icon_smile.gif

Thanks, She said that the 1st class she would have me show her what I know and go from there.

I'm the type that can learn either way...sometimes watching someone confuses me and sometimes it's the only way I can learn ... I know that's no help.. dunce.gif

Maybe I can do 1 class every 2 weeks or one a month?
When I took the wilton classes I would come home and for the next week bake cake after cake and use my new techniques... I think everyone around me was sick of eating cake.. icon_lol.gif

I never realized I could practice on styrofoam covered with icing or fondat.. until I read that on here..

She said she would have me make my own icing, but didn't say anything about other supplies.

I am going to take the fondate class at Michael's next month too..

$35 for one on one instruction of something that you don't know how to do to me would be worth it. If she can teach you something that you want to learn and don't already know, then go for it.

You have to weigh though if the cost is worth it to you.

Well, you are paying for someone's time and talent....$35 per hour for such specialized classes sounds like a bargain to me! If you can afford/justify the class I say go for it...you might learn more than you think! thumbs_up.gif

Being a math tutor, I think $35/hr is fairly reasonable for private lessons in anything from someone who is specialized in the area. But with cake decorating, you'd also have to take into account how much you are going to be spending on decorating supplies... although, you will get to eat the finished product icon_wink.gif

Thanks for all the replies. It helps hearing other opinions.
I just wasn't sure if it was a good price, but never looked at it from her angle..

I think I will at least try it and see how I like her teaching.

Hi,
I am new to this site. I work for a local bakery doing there cake decorating and am self taught (practice, instruction books, and the internet. I was planning on taking the wilton classes thru Michaels starting in Sept. Are those pretty good classes to start out with? Any information would be helpful.

I did some cake decorating before taking the wilton classes this summer (unfortunately course 3 was canceled so I'm teaching myself that stuff!). I learned a lot from them and personally would recommend them. You learn a lot of flowers and basic techniques and from that you can build on your own.
Hope that helped!
Good luck!! icon_biggrin.gif

HisGirl We had a couple girls that worked at a grocery store bakery that came to the Wilton class I was in.. One learned a lot and the other just kinda dropped out. If I recall correctly (this was ahile back) the one that stayed said she learned some new techniques that she liked.

$35.00 an hour is reasonable, but I would ask exactly what she teaches & ask to see her work.

If you decide to do it. I would be very interested to hear more about how you get on.

superstar.. I will keep you updated and let ya know how it goes.
She said she won't be starting classes until after Sept 1st. so I will have to wait until then.
She owns a place in town that sells cake and candy items, and she sells wedding cakes as well.. I havn't seen her work but she's been in buisness awhile so I 'm thinking she must be pretty good.
