Hi -
I hope I don't seem really dumb but I am slightly confused. I was told to charge 1 -2 dollars per serving. But then some people seem to charge a whole lot more. Can someone please help. Some cakes seem like they would be worth more than 1-2 dollars per serving but how do you decide.
I'm sorry I am so new and I would like to make this more than just a hobby someday, but I don't know how to charge for the cakes I do now. Some of the cakes I have done if I only did by serving would be 30-60 dollars but some have taken longer because of the detail or extra work.![]()
How do people make money making cakes and how do you get people to understand that cakes cost money specially if your doing more than the run of the meal grocery store bakery.
I'm new at the business end too. I researched the bakeries in my area and found that they charge $2/serving buttercream and $3 for fondant. So that's what I charge. Only I didn't take into consideration that most birthday cakes are simpler than wedding cakes, and party servings are bigger usually. So I think my pricing has scared off some folks. I need to adjust my website, I think.
I think you should call some bakeries in town. Not Wal-Mart, but some specialty places and ask them for prices. Or research their websites. As for making money at this, I have yet to do so. But I have heard that the money is in wedding cakes.
Good luck to you.
