I have just enough time to make a cake to take the deacons of my church. I'm asking about using the church kitchen as a business, would taking a cake be tacky?

Sounds like a good idea. Show me a deacon that doesn't like cake!

I say go for it.

You are trying to sell them so what better why than to bring your product.
You can say "here is a sample of my cakes...." icon_smile.gif

Good luck. thumbs_up.gif

cakes in the oven! I wanted to try to do a new cake flavor but decided now is not the time to try something new. I'm just making a choc. cake with carmel and health filling, covered in ganache and sprinkled with heath bits on top. Monica, you are totally right, if it's a no go then at least I might have some potential clients, at least I hope too icon_lol.gif Shoot, if they don't want the cake my family will be more thatn happy to eat is, they hate it when I make cakes for other people and they don't get some of it.

sorry, had to get my kids to bed as soon as I got home.

I'm able to use the kitchen! I'm pretty happy right now, but I'm not out of the woods yet, need to talk to the state of OH and see what needs to be done to become legal. Everyone loved the cake too so that's an added bonus! Especially since one of the deacons family owns 2 fancy schmancy golf clubs with resaurants on site. (there was 2 pieces of cake left and he shoved them on a plate and said "I'm taking these home, they are mine." One deacon though was like"how much do you plan on making, I mean anyone can make a ho-hum cake!" and that's even before the cake was put on the table in front of them. I bluntly said an answer about my plans and all the other deacons just looked at him like he was the biggest @$$ in the world.

The cake is easy to do. I like to use a scratch choc. cake, but tonight I used a DH box mix with choc. pudding, extra egg and used milk instead of water. Put into (2) 8in. pans that were greased and floured and baked on 350 for about 37 minutes (till toothpick came out clean) After 5 minutes flipped onto cooling rack and leveled when cool enough. The carmel (used 2/3 of a can of boiled sweetened cond. milk) and mixed in my heath bits to make the filling. (I like to put in the heath bits when it's cooled down some, but not completely cool so it melts the heath bits just a tiny bit) Put the cake together and then covered with choc. ganache and while still wet enough sprinkled the top with crushed up heath bits. It's really easy to do, almost too easy considering the responses I get icon_wink.gif I'm sure it's not for everyone but my family likes it! (makes pretty good cake balls too)

If you try let me know how you like it please or if there is anything I can do to make it better. Thanks for the support, melissa

Actually the government recommends you try this method first before investing seed money into a new business. Good luck to you!

www.mass.gov
Bureau of Markets - Specialty Foods
Selling Foods Made in Your Farm Kitchen

If the Health Department does not allow you to produce items from your farm kitchen, you can check with a local church or community organization with a licensed kitchen.

These kitchens are usually very well-equipped, and organizations may be willing to rent them for a nominal fee. This way you can test your business idea without incurring large expenses to remodel or change your existing farm kitchen.

The article goes on to give really awesome info on starting a home biz. Thanks, Amy
