My husband went to the store last night, I needed more butter to make icing for his cake...and he brought it home, went to bed.
I was out, and didnt realize until this morning that he just left the bag on the counter with the cake mixes.

I looked on the package, it says "Keep Refridgerated" but I remember my mom and grandmother leaving butter in the butter dish so that it was always soft enough to spread.

Should I just discard it and go out and buy more??
If it means anything, its Land O Lakes Unsalted Sweet Cream

I'd say it's fine. Keeping it refrigerated just keeps it from getting rancid as fast as it would at room temp. Butter can sit out for 3-5 days before it starts to get questionable.

My mom always left butter out when we were kids, and we are still here today!

i always leave my butter out on the counter the night before i make my icing so it is the same temperature as my shortning...this insures i get no lumps in my icing!!!!!

if the butter is salted it can be left out for at least a week. the salt acts as a perservative. unsalted butter needs to be refigerated.
