My recipe for buttercream has heavy whipping cream in it. I always refrigerate what is left. Can you keep the icing longer than the expiration date that is on the whipping cream as long as it is kept in the fridge?
As of yet..I haven't kept my buttercream in the freezer.

I use Tami's buttercream from the baking 911.com site. It also has heavy cream. I put in in the fridge for about one week, any longer than that I freeze, defrost in the fridge then bring back to room temp. It freezes very nicely and I've never had a problem. Good luck!

Freeze and thaw in fridge. Re-whip when needed.
