Fondant/gumpaste Numbers

Yesterday, I made a 50th BD cake and wanted the numbers to be standing straight up beside the figure I made. I wanted the figure to be holding the zero. I put sticks in them after they dried to stand them up and both sets broke. I see all kinds of beautiful cakes where your letters are standing up just fine.
I need HELP!! Do you put decorations behind it to give it more stability of falling over? Should I have put the stick in the number before it dried? Any help or suggestions that could be given would be greatly appreciated for the next cake where I want to do this.
Yes, you should have put the sticks in when they were wet. I have used heavy floral wire. I poked a hole in my numbers with a toothpick, piped a dot of royal icing in there. Made a small hook at the end of my floral wire and inserted the hook into royal icing filled hole. To insert them into the cake I put cocktail straws in the cake and placed the wires into the straws for stability. Rather than royal, I've heard that egg white or "glue" will work. The glue is made from making a paste out of a small amount of water and either a peice of fondant, gumpaste or some tylose powder.
Thanks so much. I guess I should have thought of royal icing as I have used that before for to lock other things in place. I tried to put my sticks in after they were completely dry which caused them to break.
