I have an order for today that is a crown cake. I would like to make some hard candy "gems" to put on it, I don't have time to run out to the store to find anything that I could substitute with, so I thought i had heard of a recipe that used sugar and something else. Could someone please point me in the right direction to find it. Thanks in advance!

i know they sell gem candy molds and you can always melt jolly ranchers or any other hard candy. ppl do this to make stained glass windows in gingerbread, or just to make fancy cookie centers (i melt butterscotch candies in the center of my eggnog cookies)

Here are some websites that sell gem shaped molds

and here is a recipe for broken glass candy.

Broken Glass Candy recipe
confectioners sugar
3 3/4 cups granulated sugar
1 1/4 cups light Karo syrup
1 cup water
Food coloring
1 teaspoon oil flavoring (available at pharmacy
in flavors such as cinnamon, anise,
wintergreen, spearmint, lime)

Sprinkle confectioners sugar on 2 (15 x 11-inch) cookie sheets.

Combine sugar, Karo syrup and water in heavy saucepan and stir over medium heat until sugar dissolves. Continue to cook, without stirring, until syrup reaches 290 degrees F on candy thermometer.

Remove from heat and add food coloring to desired intensity and the desired oil flavoring. Pour onto cookie sheets, cool and break into small pieces.

Makes 2 1/4 pounds

*I'm sure you can just pour them into the molds instead of breaking them at the end.

I frequently make hard candy. You just have to watch it. Your cake colors will not work, you need candy colors. I tried it once and they turned some weird colors. Here is the website to the main supplier for the flavor oils that most people use. They also carry the mold you want. I think it is called the gem mold. Hobby Lobby also carries it.
