Was instructed by someone on CC to add Gum Tex to my fondant when making shapes so that it stabilizes it. When I read the can of gum tex, it says to add it to Gum PASTE not fondant.
Can I still add this to fondant to make my shapes, or do I need to have gum paste instead of fondant? Am confused. Thanks for all help!
Hi vickymacd,
Yes, you can mix fondant with gum tex or CMC. The recipe is 1 teaspoon of gum tex to 12oz of fondant. Put the fondant in a plastic bag (big enough, so you can put your hand inside of it) along with gum tex and kneed it until all the gum tex is incorporated. The plastic bag trick, I learned from my course 3 Wilton instructor, this way you don't lose any gum tex. All my figurines are done using the mix. Be sure to wrap the left overs air tight, I double bag it. I HOPE IT HELPS. For cut outs to decorate the cake I use just fondant.
Hi,
I just bought some satin ice fondants! I was wondering if you still need to add gum tex to it?
Thank you,

Thank you. This is my first time using satin ice. I hope they are good and taste good.

Pinklady, if you are going to do any modeling with your fondant then add the gum-tex or CMC...or whatever you have on hand..
If it is just for covering a cake and making cutouts, like stripes, spots etc.. to stick on the cake it is not necessary..
If you are going to cut out letters, I would add just some..and let them dry a bit before you stick them on...
When I first started modeling I used MMF and it worked fine, but I have switched to the Satin Ice and I find it easier to work with.
I recently started adding just a little Gum-Tex to the Satin Ice when modeling a figure. I feel it makes the fondant a little easier to work with. I didn't measure the Gum-Tex, I just add a little to the fondant and kneaded it in.
I used the Satin Ice + Gum Tex mixture on my Hawiian cake and Graduation cake. All of the cakes with figures before those were made from either Satin Ice or MMF. My very first figure was a Santa. He was made from gumpaste but I like working with the fondant much better!
Good Luck to you. Be sure to post pictures!
