I want to incorporate fondant carrots, lettuce, shovel, fence and other garden stuff in this (maybe even a watering can). The lady is talking about three tiers to get the topsy turvy look. She wants it to be BC with fondant accents...is this too hard to do if it's just iced with buttercream? Or does the fondant help assemble it easier? I have no clue as to how to even begin pricing this darn thing either!!

Also, anybody got any directions for molding the body of Peter Rabbit and his little coat?

Any ideas and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Tarina

http://www.sculpey.com/Projects/projects_BunnyNCarrot.htm

maybe this can get you started on a bunny

as for the cake.......I think 3 tiers would be best to make a topsy turvy......2 is ok, but doesn't give the full effect!
It might be a little more difficult doing bc with fondant accents.......just because fondant is so versatile......if you covered the whole thing in fondant you would be able to paint on the fondant.....heck you could paint a whole scene on the sides of the cake......or at least some grass and stuff to make it look cool! But if the customer wants bc, give her bc.....here is a beautiful cake

http://www.heavenlyconfections.net/images/Peter%20Rabbit%20cake.jpg

I would probably just do the bc in very muted tones......maybe one layer in blue and the middle layer a pale yellow......the bottom a sandy brown color....could be really cute...lots of little fondant carrots maybe a big peter on top with a shovel digging a hole?? could stick a little wheel barrow on the side of one of the tiers...... Depending on the sizes you intend on using for the cakes.......I wouldn't sell a topsy turvy for under 50 dollars.......even if they're small cakes.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I just saw that someone posted on here. Must be something with my cookies or whatever on this computer that won't allow me to receive notices whenever I get a reply. I have had lots of trouble with this particular situation for several months now.

Anyway, thanks so much for the Sculpy tutorial for the bunny! I hadn't thought of Sculpy although I have a couple of their books at home - duhhhh!!

I also saw that cake you posted the link to with the bunny on top. I saved it for reference. Love the idea of the wheelbarrow and the colors as well. You are my fount of knowledge all in one post! I am going to start drawing out a sketch for the customer.

I was thinking of charging more along the line of $150!! Maybe it will deter her from going with a topsy turvy cake...probably not though. Do you think a 6", 8", 10" combo would give me enough room for stuff to go on the ledges?

Thanks again for so much help!! I owe you one...well, considering your ability, I probably will never be able to help you out with anything you don't already know! icon_redface.gif

I don't know if she has her heart set on fondant, but you could do some chocolate transfers to liven up the side of the cake. Merissa made a great Pooh cake - you could do something similar with Peter Rabbit stuff on the side. I think chocolate transfers are pretty easy to do. Just throwing out another idea for you to consider icon_smile.gif Her is a link to the Pooh cake I'm talking about:

Well her exact words to me when I tried to explain to her my JayJay cake (using transfers that stand up on the cake) was that she didn't like the sound of that. She wanted it to be "elegant" not "cheap-looking" and absolutely nothing that looked like it could be plastic pieces on the cake either. She has some kind of notion that she can put stuffed animals on this cake! I don't think my ideas and her ideas are going to mesh well...however, I'm willing to charge her for my time and effort if she will only be satisfied with fondant pieces. My cake instructor said it would be just like making a wedding cake with all those tiers and the gumpaste figures and what-nots...and to charge accordingly. Of course, this is coming from somebody who constantly undercharges and is always in awe as to how I find the people willing to pay my prices. There again, unlike her, I'm not in this for a living so if they don't want my prices, I don't have to do their cake!

I am definately going to show her the "Pooh" cake pic and my JayJay cake and see if that will change her mind. Thanks for link.

Well I don't know if this will help, but I will try to attach a picture of my youngest son's 1st birthday cake. It was a Peter Rabbit theme, and a 3 tier stacked cake. I didn't make it, we ordered it from a local bakery called " BoCakes " She used chocolate molds for the veggies and fence and the grass tip a lot. We were very happy with it, and it really got me interested in this whole cake thing icon_smile.gif We paid a little over $200 for it.

ok going to try to attach the pic..

I will never attempt pulled or blown sugar as I value my skin too much, so I'm going to bow to you and give you props where they are much deserved!

are you talking about the flowers that look like they're glass??? Those are just gelatin flowers....they're really simple........they're easier to make than even icing a cake let alone baking a cake. If you can bake a cake you can make those flowers here are the instructions, give it a try they look really pretty on top of a simple round cake for a topper!

Ha! I would have never guessed that is how you made those! Still, I'll leave those pretty flowers up to you! Oh, and btw, I can't do the simplest things most of the time. Like the sculpey figures, I tried to make a butterfly and couldn't do that!! I have no idea how this crazy rabbit is going to turn out.

Ahhhh, how cute is that! I love it. I can definately use most of this in my design sketch. I don't think she is going to want the transfers, but I'll give it a try. Sometimes you have to steer the customer in the direction that best suits your ability, but then you have to worry if they really end up getting what they want in the end or just simply settling.

Thank you!

Oh, this sounds like a fun project! I'm excited to see what you develop.

If you want to do any 3d stuff on the ledges--a wheelbarrow, for example--I'd definitely want at least 4" of difference between the cake layers. That only gives you a 2" ledge to play with, remember.

Edited to add: once upon a time there was an ADORABLE cake in a martha stewart magazine of a garden scene. Veggies poking up from dirt, a picket fence. My memory is a little fuzzy on the details, but maybe someone here has a picture saved. It would be a great inspiration resource!
