A Smooth 3D Cake

Does anyone know of a technique I can use on a 3D cake to make it smooth using buttercream. I don't really care for the star tip thing and it is for a one year old so I did not what to use fondant.

That Scooby Doo cake is awesome. This looks so much better than all those stars. I'm gonna try this technique on my next shaped cake.
