My friend ask me to make a cake for her to take to work at the hospital celebrating 30 years. They are having an employee party with a cake walk.

Well, I did the cake last night using a white Pillsbury cake mix with the vanilla/caramel powdered creamer. I know the cake taste wonderful because I did a extra cupcake size to taste.

Now, this is where the problem comes in to play......I am not happy with the way the cake looks. first of all, I was going to put a FBCT of the hospital logo, which didn't work because it broke into pieces when I pulled the wax paper off, I think that is when I started to get frustrated. So then I started to do the writing on the cake which is another story all on it's on...(my writing leave a lot to be desired). Then I messed up on the writing and had to remove some of it and then my base icing got messed up, now I just feel ike the whole cake is just plain ugly. I'm so sad icon_sad.gif

I wrote an email to my friend telling her what happened. She just wrote back thanking me for the hard work. She is picking it up Wednesday morning.

I will let y'all know how it turns out! Please pray for me that it's not as bad as I think. I told her that we are usually our worst critics!

Keep your chin up... I guarantee it's not as bad as YOU think it is. Even if it's not your best work, they will be happy to have it, especially once they take a bite!!! And think of it as practice!!

Edited to add: By the way... I have gorgeous handwriting, but can't write on a cake to SAVE MY LIFE!!! Whenever people see me write on paper they comment on how beautiful my handwriting is, then I try to write on a cake and it looks like I let a 3 year old do it!! icon_lol.gif We ALL stink at something!

I bet it looks great. We are always harder on ourselves, than others are. I will be thinking about you. Don't worry, you always do wonderful work. thumbs_up.gif

I'm sure it's not as bad as you think. Since she's not picking it up until tomorrow, you still have time to do another FBCT if you need it. Also, I can't tell you how many times I have scraped off my writing and rewritten it (sometimes 3 or 4 times on a single cake!!!!) Maybe you and I both should invest in some letter presses. I know a few people on here just type what they want into Word on the computer, get it to the size they want, change the font, print it out, and use a pinprick method, then trace. I have never tried it, but have seen some beautifully written cakes that way. Good luck.

We all have moments where we look at our cakes and think they look dashed awful - just take a deep breath and walk away from it for a bit. WHen your energy has come back you can have another fresh go - keep at it and you will be pleased with the outcome. I have a recognisable stage in my cake decorating now and it happens EVERY time I make a acake - about halfway through I think it's just dreadful and hate it and wonder why I bother. The key thing for me is to take regular breaks and keep going at it until I'm happy. Good luck, we're all thinking of you!

COuld someone tell me whagt a 'cakewalk' is - I've not heard this word before.

Emmascakes... I've been known to hit that brick wall too! You think, "What have I done here?" then when the cake is done you think, "Well that doesn't stink so bad!"

What I remember a cake walk being when I was a kid was like musical chairs, but the prize was a cake. Maybe I am soooo old (33...that's not old!!) that I don't remember correctly!

Thank you all so much, you are all so very sweet and encouraging!

I did look at it again this moring and it didn't look quite as bad as it did last night...guess the cake fairies gave me a liitle help last night while I was sleeping.

It is a game at carnivals or sthings like that where you set the cake on the ground and people stand in a circle. each person will walk by the cake and when the music stops whoever is standing next to the cake wins it! At least thats the way we do it here.[/quote

I bet it looks great!! So don't worry to much. You are right we are our own worst critics. I did a Blue's Clues cake Friday, and I didn't like how it came out, but the friend I did it for loved it. So we are way to hard on ourselves. *HUGZ*

Well if you are looking for some tips that might fix it you could try to do a FBCT over the entire surface of the cake (to hide the mistakes) I have some in my gallery that i did like that. They turn out nicely! Also I think if you use parchment (specifically I use the wilton silicone treated kind) your transfer will not stick to it. I have heard a lot of comments about people having the transfers stick to wax paper. No problems here with the parchment. As for writing there are many ways to improve writing..pin prick, laser level, my favorite royal icing letters...let me know if you want any instructions.

Good luck and a big hug! I hope it turns out nicely!

Merissa,

It is so funny that you mentioned Parchment paper. I have some of that at home, and I got it out and started to use it on my FBCT, then I thought for a minute and thought that I remembered someone on here saying that they had better luck with wax paper.....I thought???? I think I remembered wrong, and it was the opposite! I will know better next time!

P.S. Thank you all so much!

Okay...I am saying I think parchment is better for well...just about everything!! I use the wilton silicone treated kind (i dont know if it makes a difference if it is silicone treated or not, but that is all I have used and it works great) I use it for FBCT, and I use it for royal letters. I used wax once for royal letters and they got stuck a little and broke in many places. I havent tried a FBCT on wax paper yet, but I have not had a problem with them sticking on parchment. I suggest the parchment for this because I have seen many post where people are having the FBCT stick to the wax paper. I am sure there are others who would recommend the wax over parchment, but I personally like parchment. You can also use it to trace your drawing onto and flip it for a reverse image...really nice if you want to incorporate words onto FBCT too! I have done that a couple of times (my little pooh smash cake I wrote "happy birthday nathan" on it.
