A friend of mine has asked me to make an armadillo cake for her son's rehersal dinner this Friday. She has specifically asked for boxed cake so my question is if I use Americolor coloring will it turn the yellow cake mix red or is it better to use the white cake mix? I am thinking that the yellow mix would taste better than the white but don't know for sure. Please help.
Thanks

You could do a red velvet cake mix. It's already red, then you wouldn't have to color it.

We talked about red velvet, not an option that is why I was wondering about the yellow and white mix.

I've made white batter red and blue and it does great, but I don't know how yellow would do.

You could try it and see if you have some extra time.

Good LUck! (and if you do yellow, let us know how it turns out.)

If red velvet cake works with the whole bottle of red.........( I mean they're turning choc. cake to red right??) then I don't see why it wouldn't work with yellow......but you're going to have to add a ton.........You might be better off going with the white cake......you'll get a more true red out of it!!! The yellow will be orange for a while before you get it red.

If it were me, I think that I would use a white cake mix and I would save my Americolors and go buy a bottle of McCormick's red food coloring. It comes in 1oz bottles and you may need most of the bottle to achieve the true red that you are wanting.
They sell it with all the spices at the grocery store.

I ended up using about 3 oz. of food coloring to achieve a true red color.

Maybe it is 3oz. I couldn't exactly remember....all I know is that it seems like a lot.
