What type of cake is the best for carving? I baked a standard box yellow mix one and it fell apart when I tried to cut it into a shape. What's the best to use and does anyone have a recipe or a box mix suggestion? Thanks.

I use the DH box mix and do the pound cake recipe off the side of the box. So far they've held up well.

Have you tried freezing the cake?? That's what worked for a box mix carved into Thomas for a friend's son's birthday.

Good luck!!

Whenever I need to make a cake that is going to be carved or 3D, I take a box mix plus a box of instant pudding (chocolate for chocolate, vanilla for white, etc.) and add an extra egg. It gives it just enough stability for carving. I second doing it while frozen it crumbs up less. HTH!
