My First Wedding Cake...this Has Been The Day From Hell!!!
Decorating By wenchuck Updated 12 Aug 2007 , 4:03am by kathik
I just need to rant. I got my first wedding cake order YEAH!!!! It's due to be delivered tomorrow afternoon. I've had weeks to make all these plans. I planned on starting baking yesterday. It was 105 degrees yesterday, lost power last night and then some water line on the fridge busted at 1am and practically flooded the kitchen. I had to quit baking and shut off all the water to the house until it was fixed around lunchtime today. Plus, I work 3rd shift and had made a few layers of my wedding cake before I left for work. I neglected to let the dog out before I left and she ate my freaking cake!!! So...today...it was 104 degrees. I had my oven on from 12-8. My house is like an oven. I still have to make tons of icing and ice these cakes. Is anyone else's first wedding cake like this?
But you know what...despite all this garbage that has happenend over the last 24 hours...I STILL LOVE DECORATING CAKES!!!! and I can't wait to get more orders. ![]()
I remember a similiar thing making my sister's wedding cake- my first wedding. I didn't have so many disasters, but it was HOT HOT HOT. My icing was melting and I had not been smart and was planning on using this icing scraper thing that had all these fun patterns, and a square cake-neither of which I had used before. I didn't even think that the edges of the square would be particularly hard to do. Very naive. Ended up doing a basketweave around it to hide the flaws. And TONS of pretty flowers.
So just keep an open mind, be ready to punt when things go wrong. And try to have fun.
I can relate...a day from humidity hell...absolute hell with sliding fondant...BUT I too adore/love/am obsessed by decorating and can't wait to do the next one!!! (but today's wasn't the wedding cake...it is the shower cake I wanted to be perfect and it's not.
)
sounds like what i went through in early june with same temps and it was only ten degrees cooler inside WITH ac AND swamp cooler AND... A fan on the cakes as i was decorating them WHILE they were MELTING AS i decorated them! lol i can understand the frustration but i also share the desire for a new challange. something fun! ![]()
I'm in the middle of my first wedding cake order right now!!! And it's just as challenging!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The bride wanted a traditional cake for the ceremony ( private & small) and then wants a fun, 70's theme cake for the reception.
I had everything planned in my head, was going to go into the city on tuesday to get everything that I need and then ....... I got sick.
I'm 26 weeks pregnant & somehow ended up with a "silent" bladder infection and my body was going septic. What I thought was a common cold turned into near hospitilization.
So here I am, functioning @ about 70% energy level. The traditional cake is ready to be delivered to the venue and my DH calls to tell me that he won't be home from work until about 9:00 and there is no way I'm juggling a 3 tier cake & 2 kids. I guess I will have to wait till the morning.
My mom went into the city & bought the wrong food colouring (she bought edible markers instead of paste) and nowhere in my town sells the paste. I am stuck using crappy grocery store liquid stuff!!
A have 2 cakes in the oven to sculpt into VW bugs & then need to bake the cakes I need for 2 VW vans. The 4 vehicles are the "cake" for the reception. They represent the bride, groom & their 2 kids.
oh I still have the issue of cake boards! AARRGGGHHH!!! Deep breaths!!
The kids are having KD for dinner tonight!!!!
There is no where to go... but UP!!!!
Hang in there!!!!
Ditto - "Bless all of your hearts"......sounds like we have all been there....in one way or another......the "......CAKE FROM HE**!"
But we get thru it and are looking forward the next one...... I love decorating and have learned so much from this site.....not just in the decorating end of it but all the trial and tribulations of others. It give you a sense that you are not alone in your woes and a boost of confidence to move on.....thank you all at CC.
oh honey...I wish you the best of luck
As they say..you never forget your first....there are many valuable learning experiences from that cake
you will laugh at them later..trust ![]()
here's MY horror story.....
My first wedding cake was for my boss...a beautiful 3 tier monstrosity
(4-inch high layers) with a beautiful scroll design on the side and fresh fruit on the top...well i figured it wasnt going to be that hard so I didnt make a practice cake (HUGE LEARNERS MISTAKE)
I get the bottom tier done and set it off to the side (I had dried the fruit on paper toweling all night thinking the juices would drain off a little) i started on the second layer and my roommates daughter said "um...is that cake supposed to be pink?!"
THE FREAKIN STRAWBERRIES WERE PEEING ON MY CAKE!!!!
so...because it hadn't crusted yet...i took all the buttercream off and the fruit off and started all over again...needless to say...I walked into the reception AFTER it had started and by then all three tiers were leaking onto the sides of the cakes and the back side was starting to peel off...so after I busted into tears in front of 90% of the managment from my work...I didnt even take a picture of the freakin thing and offered him his entire payment back...he told me i was ridiculous for offering that and that it was exactly what he wanted (im sure he was thanking a higher power that it was dim in there!!!!)...and told me thanks and all that polite stuff....I found out later..that the ENTIRE thing was eaten..even the top tier and people were eating 2 and 3 peices of cake and the last few slices-people were paying each other for them!!!
(they had told me 150ppl were going to be there...so I made enuogh cake for 160...and only 90 showed up...and they ate the whole thing )-that definetly made my day!!
something good will come out of this...not to mention..im sure it was a beautiful, delicious cake ![]()
Best Wishes!!
On top of everything...this isn't even my account...it's my customer's name. I directed her here to look at cakes and save them so I could know what she wanted. I forgot that I was logged on as her looking at the cake and tada...I posted this. My user name is howiesmom.
My name is Nancy...and I'm a dork LOL
Welcome aboard, Nancy the dork! LOL
Sounds like things can only get better, right?
Be sure to post pics, can't wait to see how well they turn out! ![]()
I've got it right this time...I'm under the correct user name! I'm attaching a pic of the cake. It was an interesting adventure. I took my mom with me to deliver the cake since it was my first. I had stacked the bottom two tiers at home (in her lap in transit) and the top layer in the backseat with my 3 yr old! First, there was a car wreck right in front of us...had to slam on brakes---thumb in cake. Then someone pulled out right in front of me---thumb in cake again...different spot. Then I'm driving, minding my own business and my son tells me that the icing tastes good...he was sitting there wiping the icing off the cake and eating it. I ALREADY DECORATED THE CAKES!!! Luckily, thanks to CC members, I took extra icing with me and was able to repair all the damage that occurred. Let me know what you think of my FIRST WEDDING CAKE!!!
Wenchuck, I'm right there with you! My first wedding cake is being picked up ![]()
any minute now, and I have gone through a week like yours. My oven element died the morning I was to start baking and of course no one in town had it, it had to be special ordered!
This left me crying and stressing out until I figured out (thanks to DH) that yes, my pans would fit in my tiny dairy oven. Then I had to be sure that I would be allowed to kasher this oven and use it for a parve cake (according to Jewish law). Then finally, I could kasher it and three hours later begin baking! All on the hottest 2 days of the year in NC, 102, 103 respectively. Now, I just have to wait for the bride to get here! She's late, of course. I just want her to sign the waiver, take responsibility and take this cake out of the house! ![]()
By the way, your cake came out beautifully. Very elegant.
