Wow!! That is awesome!! I can't believe this was your first time trying it - I think I would have to do at least 10 of those to get it half as good as that
Your cake is beautiful! Can I ask, how did you do it so that the lid stay up? And I am assuming that the "tissue paper" is fondant?
That is absolutely precious!!!! A happy heart, that a great feeling isnt it? You should be so proud I'm saving it to my favs too! K'ly
What a sweet sweet cake! I love the little bear peering out. Cute. I want to try one of those. I am just amazed at all the talent on this site AND that people share their ideas and techniques!
Thanks everyone for your nice comments
Moralna ~ I just stuck dowels into the cake, 3 in the front and 3 in the back, to hold the lid up. I made the front ones taller than the back ones. I measured the height of the cake, the height of the bear and then the depth of the box lid and cut my dowels that length for the front. The back ones I just eyeballed. Then I just sat the lid on top of it. Oh, and yes the tissue paper was fondant. HTH.
Oh! So the front dowels go through the Teddy Bear, but you can't see them - is that right?
Gorgeous !!! Great Job !!!
Looks to me like maybe the dowels in the front go through the bear and the fondant ....... (??)
Did you make the bear out of fondant or is it a stuffed bear???
WOW.. It looks great!!!! Congrats!! Yes I agree a learning experience!!!
hcromwell Here is my first gift box cake! I was so nervous. I had no instructions nor had I practice one yet (before the real day it had to be made) I just jumped right in there..
I made for my niece a few weekends ago.. It was so much fun.. .. Boy I need alot practice on fondant bows.. This was my first aswell..
I only had 2 dowels in mine.. First I bought a springform pan. It is 8x8 square pan.. I made 3 layers.. I cut one of the layers in half and used it for the top (lid).. I cut the cardboard to fit the top perfect.. And iced it with chocolate icing.. I iced the entire cake and placed the first dowel about an inch from the edge (from the front of the cake) I then layed my top layer on the cake.. It was then lifted a little. I then placed another dowel throught the back of the lid through the entire cake.. Am I making sense?
Oh! So the front dowels go through the Teddy Bear, but you can't see them - is that right?
Nope, they're actually behind the bear. I probably would've put them closer to the front if the lid would've been on there for any length of time, to help prevent it falling backwards. But, since I just sat the lid on it when I got it to the party I figured it would be okay...and it was.
auntsushi ~ yes the bear is fondant...however I'm taking it as a compliment that you asked if it was stuffed
briansbaker....your cake is absolutely gorgeous!!!! My next one I'm going to try to make the lid a cake as well. Yours looks so neat and tidy! Love the colors.
